Forbidden Island Win & Loss Conditions: Treasures, Fools’ Landing & Water

Forbidden Island has one cooperative victory condition and several ways to lose. Because some losses happen immediately, knowing which flooded tiles are truly critical is essential.

Win: collect all four treasures and escape together

The team must capture the Earth Stone, Statue of the Wind, Crystal of Fire and Ocean’s Chalice. Then every adventurer must be on Fools’ Landing and a player must use a Helicopter Lift card to carry the group off the island.

Lose if both pickup tiles for an unclaimed treasure sink

Each treasure can be captured from either of two specific tiles. If both tiles for a treasure sink before the team has captured that treasure, the treasure can no longer be collected and the team loses immediately.

Lose if Fools’ Landing sinks

Fools’ Landing is the only final escape tile. If it sinks, the helicopter escape is impossible and the team loses immediately.

Lose if an adventurer sinks with no legal escape

If the tile occupied by an adventurer sinks, that adventurer must move to an adjacent surviving tile using the emergency-swim rule. If no legal adjacent tile exists, the adventurer is lost and the entire team loses.

Lose if the water level reaches the skull

Waters Rise! cards move the marker upward. If the water level reaches the skull/death marker on the meter, the island is overwhelmed and the team loses immediately.

Captured treasures stay captured

Once the team has claimed a treasure, later loss of its two pickup tiles does not undo that treasure. This is why shoring priorities can shift after each successful capture.
