Caverna Strategy: Family Growth, Expeditions & Farm Balance
Editorial analysis: Caverna is a broad efficiency game. The strongest farms usually build an engine that creates more actions and flexible resources while avoiding expensive late corrections for empty spaces, missing animals or food.
Family growth is still the strongest long-term action multiplier
An extra dwarf can produce several actions before the game ends. Build the dwelling and secure family growth early enough that the new worker repays those setup actions, but do not add mouths without a credible feeding plan.
Use furnishings to specialize the economy
Caverna offers many room effects, but taking a furnishing only because it looks strong can scatter your plan. Favor rooms that reduce repeated action costs, improve resources you already collect or create a scoring route that overlaps your existing board.
Expeditions convert ore and one worker into flexibility
Weapons require investment, but a strong armed dwarf can take rewards that would otherwise require several different action spaces. This is most valuable when the expedition rewards solve bottlenecks—food, building materials, animals or board development—rather than when they merely duplicate easy actions.
Build animal capacity before taking the giant pile
Large animal accumulation spaces are attractive only if your pastures, stables and rooms can legally hold the animals. Housing first lets breeding turn one collection action into repeated growth at later harvests.
Rubies are valuable because they preserve options
Rubies can substitute for timing in several ways under the rules. Their flexibility makes them strongest when they prevent a wasted action or let you claim a contested opportunity before another player, rather than when spent simply because they are available.
Avoid leaving the home board unfinished
Unused spaces lose points. Plan cave excavation, rooms, fields and fenced spaces so ordinary engine development also covers the board. Filling multiple empty spaces late can consume actions that would otherwise create direct points.
Do not ignore a farm-animal type entirely
Missing sheep, donkeys, wild boar or cattle creates a penalty. Near the end, taking one animal of a missing type can therefore be worth more than its normal 1 point because it also removes a -2 penalty.
Late actions should convert, not merely build potential
By the final rounds, judge rooms, weapons and economic upgrades by immediate points or concrete final-turn value. An engine that would be excellent with three more harvests may be poor if only one worker cycle remains.
