Connect 4 Strategy: Center Control, Threats & Forced Wins
Connect 4 is a solved abstract game, but practical play still revolves around a few clear tactical principles.
Value the center
Central columns participate in more possible four-cell lines than edge columns, so discs placed near the middle generally create more future connections.
Count the square above your move
Because gravity controls access, every disc you drop also creates a new landing square above it. Before playing, check whether that square gives the opponent an immediate win.
Create double threats
A strong move threatens two different winning cells on the next turn. Since the opponent can place only one disc, a genuine double threat is usually decisive.
Do not block only the obvious line
Diagonal setups can be harder to notice than horizontal threes. Scan all three win directions before committing to an attacking move.
