Mancala Strategy: Extra Turns, Captures, Pit Counting & Endgame
Mancala strategy starts with calculating exactly where the last stone of each candidate move will land.
Prioritize productive extra turns
A move ending in your home cup gives you another move immediately. Chaining an extra turn into a capture or another scoring move can produce more value than a single large sow.
Count before you pick up
Before selecting a pit, count its stones forward to identify the landing point. This prevents accidental donations to the opponent’s side and reveals home-cup finishes.
Create capture targets
Empty pits on your side can become capture squares when the opposite pit contains stones. Plan moves that let a final stone land there at the right moment.
Protect valuable opposite pits
If your opponent has an empty pit opposite one of your large stone piles, check whether their next move can land there and capture your stones.
Watch the empty-side finish
As pits run low, the game can end abruptly when one side becomes empty. Evaluate how many stones are already secure in your home cup rather than focusing only on the current sow.
