Power Grid: Recharged Strategy – Auctions, Turn Order & Cash Flow
Editorial analysis: Power Grid rewards liquidity and timing. A powerful plant, cheap fuel or large network only matters if you still have enough cash to connect cities and can power them when the end arrives.
Bid for efficiency, not just capacity
A high-capacity plant can be overpriced if it burns expensive fuel or arrives before you can afford the cities it powers. Compare purchase price, fuel efficiency, resource competition and how many rounds the plant is likely to remain useful.
Turn order is a resource
Being ahead can mean acting later in the resource and building phases. Sometimes delaying a city connection preserves a favorable position and lets you buy cheap fuel or claim a contested connection before the leader.
Watch what fuel opponents actually need
The resource market is shared. If several rivals depend on coal, buying coal can raise their operating costs even when your own plant mix is flexible. Conversely, entering a crowded fuel type can make an otherwise efficient plant expensive to run.
Do not spend the cash reserved for network expansion
Plant auctions create visible excitement, but the network often consumes more money than expected. Before bidding, estimate the city and connection costs needed before the next bureaucracy. Winning an auction and then failing to build can waste an entire income cycle.
Build toward multiple city options
A network with branching access is harder to block and gives you alternatives when a cheap city is taken. Long dead-end routes may be efficient now but expensive if you must later backtrack through high connection costs.
Keep enough generation capacity for the final jump
The game is won by powered cities, not by owning the most impressive network. Near the end, verify that your plants and stored fuel can actually supply the number of cities you plan to connect.
Count the opponent’s possible final build
Cash is hidden only imperfectly because income and major spending are visible. Track whether a rival can afford the connections required to trigger the end and whether their plants can power that many cities. This tells you when an apparently normal building round may be the last one.
