Caylus 1303 Strategy: Worker Timing, Provost & Castle Delivery
Editorial analysis: Caylus 1303 rewards placements that remain valuable after the table manipulates the road. A powerful building beyond the Provost is not powerful if opponents can cheaply switch it off.
Value workers as both actions and currency
Workers are consumed by placements, continued play after others pass and some Provost moves. Do not commit every worker early unless those placements are protected and high-value.
Pass timing can create Provost leverage
Passing earlier improves your position on the Guilds Bridge and can secure first-player advantages. Staying in longer gives more actions but can make every extra placement progressively more expensive.
Build actions other players want
Owned buildings can produce prestige when other players use them. A useful road tile can therefore score repeatedly while also expanding your own future action menu.
Place beyond the Provost only with a plan
A late-road worker can force opponents to spend workers moving the Provost, but it is also vulnerable. Use those placements when you control bridge order or when the action is valuable enough to justify the risk.
Castle delivery is dependable prestige
Each legal bundle scores immediately. Deliver when your resources are otherwise awkward or when the Favor can improve your Character/building position, but avoid starving an engine that produces more points later.
Characters are temporary advantages
Because Favors can move Characters, build a plan that benefits from a Character without collapsing if another player takes it away.
Rounds 7–9 are conversion rounds
Late worker generation and infrastructure have fewer chances to repay. Shift toward monuments, castle deliveries, construction prestige and gold that converts at game end.
