Yahtzee Strategy: Keepers, Upper Bonus, Zeros & Endgame Choices

Yahtzee strategy is mostly scorecard management: each good roll has several possible homes, but every category can only be used once.

Track the 63-point upper target

The 35-point bonus is substantial. Strong Fours, Fives and Sixes can compensate for weak low-number boxes, so monitor the subtotal rather than judging each upper roll alone.

Keep flexible first rolls

Pairs and connected sequences can point toward several categories. Early in a turn, flexibility is often worth more than forcing a single low-probability target.

Do not chase Yahtzee blindly

Five of a kind is valuable, but repeated rerolls can turn a decent Three of a Kind, Four of a Kind or upper score into a forced zero. Consider the scorecard cost of failure.

Choose zeros deliberately

If a zero is unavoidable, sacrifice a category that has the lowest realistic future value. The best choice changes depending on which boxes remain and whether the upper bonus is still reachable.

Preserve Chance when useful

Chance can rescue an awkward late-game roll. Using it very early may leave you with fewer safe exits when the scorecard is constrained.
