Wingspan vs Ark Nova: Bird Engine or Heavier Zoo Strategy?
Wingspan and Ark Nova are both animal-themed card-driven strategy games, but they occupy different complexity levels. Wingspan builds a compact habitat engine; Ark Nova is a longer zoo-development game with shifting action strength, spatial enclosure planning and conservation projects.
Quick comparison
| Wingspan | Ark Nova | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 1–5 | 1–4 |
| Play time | 40–90 min | 90–150 min |
| Weight | Medium | Medium–heavy |

| Spatial puzzle | Light | Significant enclosure placement |
| Solo | Automa | Official solo mode |
Wingspan is more streamlined
Every bird goes into one of three habitats, and each habitat corresponds to a core action. The engine is easy to visualize because adding birds directly improves that row’s output.
Ark Nova has more systems to coordinate
Its five action cards shift strength after use. You also manage enclosure space, animals, Sponsors, Association workers, partner zoos, universities, conservation projects and two intersecting scoring tracks.
Card play feels different
Wingspan cards mostly improve actions, score points or trigger powers. Ark Nova cards have more prerequisites and are embedded in a larger economy of icons, reputation, enclosure sizes and conservation requirements.
Game clock
Wingspan lasts four fixed rounds. Ark Nova ends when one player’s Appeal and Conservation markers meet or pass each other, so the pace depends more on player progress.
Which fits your group?
- Wingspan: better if you want a medium-weight engine builder with a shorter teach.
- Ark Nova: better if you want a longer, denser strategy game with more spatial and timing decisions.
