Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons — Ravenloft

A cooperative monster hunt through Barovia, with four different puzzles and a dangerous gift for your heroes.

♟1–5 Players◷45–60 Minutes▣2026⚙Cooperative◆Yes, 1 player

Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons — Ravenloft sends a team of heroes into Barovia to solve monster-specific challenges before the opposition overwhelms them. Its four foes—Carrionette, Gulthias Tree, Baba Lysaga and Strahd von Zarovich—make each matchup a different cooperative puzzle.

This guide explains the hero/monster rhythm, offers practical team-planning tips, compares Ravenloft with the earlier D&D Horrified box, and points to Ravensburger’s revised files. It is a publisher-sourced guide with editorial strategy analysis, not a hands-on review.

Why It Stands Out

Ravenloft is a standalone 2026 Horrified game, so a first-time player can begin here. Five hero classes, four distinct monsters, the custom d20, and Dark Gifts give its familiar rescue-and-defeat framework a gothic D&D setting.

About Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons — Ravenloft

Published by Ravensburger as product 24500, Ravenloft supports one to five players, ages ten and up, in roughly 45–60 minutes. The game contains a board, five hero tiles, four monster figures, five monster mats, items, villagers, cards, dice, and instructions. It is a cooperative board game rather than a Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying campaign.

How to Play Horrified: Ravenloft

The goal is cooperative: defeat the selected monsters while keeping the party and Barovia from being overrun. Each foe has its own mat and challenge. Read the exact setup, abilities, and win/loss triggers from the rulebook in your copy or Ravensburger’s updated English instructions.

1. Build the challenge

Choose the monsters and hero classes as the instructions direct. Place the board, monster mats, item supply, villagers and the terror and frenzy markers. Each monster’s task changes what the team must collect or accomplish before it can be defeated; do not assume a solution from another Horrified box applies here.

2. Hero phase

On a hero turn, use the class’s actions to move, gather useful items, guide villagers, and work on monster tasks. A hero’s power can make some jobs more efficient, so agree on priorities before scattering across the map.

3. Monster phase

After the hero acts, monsters respond. Their movement and attacks threaten heroes and villagers, while the team’s time and safety can shrink. Read the monster card and each active monster’s mat closely; Ravenloft’s four opponents have distinct effects.

4. Solve and survive

Complete the required puzzle for every active foe, then defeat them under their individual rules. Coordinate defense, rescue and item delivery so a near-finished objective is not undone by rising terror. The revised rulebook is especially useful if your printed copy differs from its later clarifications.

Ravenloft Strategy & Team Tips

These are planning principles inferred from Ravensburger’s hero/monster structure; they are not guaranteed outcomes or a substitute for each monster mat.

  • Read every monster objective before the first move. Some progress needs particular items or locations. Assign the scarce errands before heroes commit to long routes.
  • Give each hero a job, then regroup. One hero can gather while another protects a villager or advances a monster task. Reassess after each monster phase instead of rigidly following a plan that no longer fits the board.
  • Protect the loss condition. A turn spent preventing a dangerous attack can be worth more than a small step on a distant objective. Watch the terror marker and the threats to nearby villagers.
  • Use class powers for the jobs they shorten. Five classes have different tools. The best division of labor depends on the chosen monsters and current board, not a fixed class ranking.
  • Account for the d20 and Dark Gifts. A powerful option with an uncertain or costly consequence can alter the plan. Do not rely on a single fortunate roll; keep a route that still works when luck turns.
  • Check the revised files when a rule feels inconsistent. Ravensburger has uploaded an updated rulebook and replacement components. Avoid building a strategy around a misprinted number or tile.

Solo play

Ravensburger lists one player. Solo keeps the cooperative puzzle but puts every priority on one person: plan monster progress and villager safety together, then revisit your priorities after each monster activation. Follow the included solo setup and hero instructions for any differences from a multiplayer game.

Standalone Game, Editions & Rule Updates

Do I need the first D&D Horrified?

No. Ravensburger explicitly calls Ravenloft a standalone game. The earlier Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons features a different set of D&D monsters—the Beholder, Red Dragon, Mimic and Displacer Beast. Choose Ravenloft for Barovia, Strahd and Dark Gifts; choose the first box for its original monster lineup. Do not treat Ravenloft as a small expansion requiring that box.

What was updated?

Ravensburger has posted English instructions V2 and separate replacement files on the game’s BoardGameGeek files page. The publisher uploads include updates for the Sorcerer hero tile, Paladin hero tile and Strahd dungeon component. If you own an early copy, compare its printed components with the current files before interpreting a disputed ability or check. Later printings may already incorporate revisions; inspect your actual box.

Should I mix boxes?

Ravensburger markets Ravenloft as a complete adventure. If you want to combine content from Horrified sets, use explicit compatibility instructions for the exact pair of boxes; monster mats, locations and symbols are not automatically interchangeable.
