Hitster Rules, Tokens & Game Modes

Build a timeline of songs from earliest to latest. You do not need to name the precise year in the standard game—just place each new track correctly among the ones you have already earned.

Hitster is a music party game in which players scan song cards, hear a track and guess where it belongs on a personal chronological timeline. The aim in Original mode is to be the first player or team to have 10 correctly placed music cards in that timeline. It rewards relative music knowledge: recognizing that a song comes before or after an existing hit can be enough, even when you cannot name its release year.

The official US Original edition lists 2–10 players, about 30 minutes and ages 16+. Its box lists 308 music cards and 37 tokens; editions sold in other countries can have a different song selection or component count. This guide focuses on Hitster Original, not the separately branded Bingo edition or country-specific themed decks.

Hitster rules at a glance

StepWhat happensWhat matters
PrepareGive each player or team one face-up dated music card. This starts a timeline, oldest songs on the left.
ScanUse the free Hitster app to play the QR-coded song. The guessing player should not see the hidden date.
PlaceChoose the gap in your timeline where the song belongs. In Original mode, the exact year is not required.
CheckReveal the date on the card.Keep correctly placed cards; discard incorrect ones unless a valid token challenge changes the outcome.
WinBe the first to build a timeline with 10 correctly positioned cards. You can play individually or in teams.

One-sentence explanation for a first-time group: hear the song, guess whether it is older or newer than the music already on your table, then reveal the year to see whether it stays.

How to set up Hitster

  1. Choose players or teams. A group can share a timeline as a team or each person can build their own.
  2. Prepare the music cards. Keep upcoming QR-coded cards separate from the dated cards already revealed in players’ timelines.
  3. Start each timeline. Give each player or team one card with its release date visible. This is the reference point for all later guesses.
  4. Decide whether to use tokens. For Original mode with the full token rules, each player or team begins with two Hitster tokens. For a simpler introduction, the current official instructions allow playing without tokens.
  5. Open the official app. Follow its country-specific streaming setup and choose a DJ or rotate the scanning job. Then start the first song.

One practical precaution: keep the phone screen angled away from whoever is guessing, and avoid smartwatch notifications revealing track details when acting as DJ.

What happens on a Hitster turn?

A card is scanned and a track plays. Without looking at the date side, the active player places the card to the left of their existing timeline for an older song, to the right for a newer song, or between two cards if they think its date falls within that interval. The card is then revealed. A correct chronological position earns the card; an incorrect position normally sends it to the discard area. The next player takes a turn.

Worked timeline example (illustrative years; not real Hitster card art)

Your current timeline contains songs dated 1984 and 2012. You hear a track and think it was released during the late 1990s, so you place the new card between them.

198419972012

You reveal 1997. The card remains because it fits chronologically. You did not have to say “1997” aloud: the position alone is enough in Original mode. Had the new card shown 1978, the placement would have been incorrect.

What if two cards are from the same year? The official rules accept either order for cards with an identical year. The year printed on the physical card is the reference for adjudication, even if another recording or later release of the same song exists.

How Hitster tokens work: skip, steal and earn

Tokens add another layer without changing the chronological goal. In Original mode there are three ways to spend them and one important way to earn them:

Token actionRuleExample
Skip a songOn your own turn, spend one token to discard the unknown track and scan another. You hear an unfamiliar genre and prefer a different chance.
Challenge an opponentBefore their card is flipped, shout “Hitster” and place a token at the spot you believe is correct on their timeline. They put a song after 2005; you believe it belongs earlier.
Take a free cardAt any time, exchange three tokens for the top music card and add it to your timeline without guessing its year.A player at eight cards converts accumulated tokens into a ninth card.
Earn a tokenOn your own turn, correctly name both the song and its artist to receive one token—even if the timeline guess is wrong.Knowing who performs a song helps fund a later skip.

You may hold at most five tokens in Original mode. When challenging, act before the year is exposed. If your proposed placement is correct and the original player’s is not, you can claim the card. If the original placement was already correct, the player whose turn it is keeps that card; you do not steal it by identifying a different position that would also work. Tokens committed to an unsuccessful challenge are spent. If multiple players challenge, the publisher specifies an order and does not allow two tokens in the same proposed position.

Common confusion: knowing an artist or exact year is useful for earning tokens or in advanced modes, but it is not required just to keep a correctly placed card in the standard Original game.

Original vs Pro vs Expert vs cooperative rules

The official rules support different difficulty settings, so experienced music fans need not dominate a table of casual listeners. The requirements change by mode:

ModeRequirement to keep a cardToken setup
OriginalPut the song in chronological order. Two tokens if playing with token rules; token-free play is also an option.
ProPlace it correctly and name the artist and title.Start with five; no newly earned tokens.
ExpertPlace it correctly and identify the artist, title and exact year.Start with three; no newly earned tokens.
CooperativeOne shared timeline: place each song correctly as a group.Five shared tokens; an incorrect placement costs one.

In cooperative play, the group tries to reach 10 correctly placed cards before running out of tokens. Official instructions also allow groups to reduce starting tokens for an extra challenge. Depending on the localized rule sheet, labels and setup steps may differ slightly, so use the rules supplied for your exact edition when in doubt.

Do you need Spotify Premium to play Hitster?

No, a Spotify Premium subscription is not universally required for current Hitster play. The official localized instructions describe free-account or no-account playback options, generally with a short preview rather than the entire song. For paid streaming accounts, the app may offer full-track playback or previews. Which service options are available depends on the country, app version and music rights.

The important requirement is the official Hitster app and physical QR-coded music cards. Download the app using the official Hitster download page and follow its supported streaming setup. The app plays the audio; the game is not intended to be played by copying song cards or downloading unofficial music files.

Official instructions describe two practical start controls for short clips: a gyroscope option that begins playback when the phone turns face down, or a brief countdown. This helps stop the guessing player from reading the artist or song title accidentally. If your app shows different options, follow the instructions available for your region rather than assuming every edition uses identical settings.

What if the app or a song will not play?

  1. Check that the app is up to date and the phone has working audio and internet access.
  2. Confirm the app is set to the correct streaming or preview mode available in your country.
  3. Try the alternative audio-start setting if turning the phone face down does not trigger playback.
  4. If a specific track is unavailable in your region, follow the official app guidance and use another card rather than guessing from a broken scan.

Music availability can change because of streaming licences. Do not assume an unavailable track proves that the card or edition is counterfeit.

Practical tips to make better timeline guesses

Use clues that do not require memorizing exact years. Arrangement, production style and recording texture may provide a rough period, but these clues can mislead: a modern song may deliberately imitate an older sound. Compare several independent clues before deciding where to place the card.

Think in intervals. Your early timeline might have 1980 and 2020, leaving an enormous span where a new song could fit. Later, cards closer together create more precise boundaries. When unsure, reason about the nearest years rather than trying to name one exact date.

Save tokens for high-impact decisions. A skip is useful when a song is completely unfamiliar, but three saved tokens convert directly into one guaranteed timeline card. Whether the trade is worthwhile depends on how close someone is to ten cards.

Challenge selectively. You need both a likely error by your opponent and confidence in your own alternative position. A challenge against a song already correctly placed does not earn you the card, even if a same-year tie allows another acceptable position.

Choose balanced teams. For a multigenerational group, mixed-age teams or different player difficulty levels can make a session more engaging without altering the music or pretending everyone has the same knowledge.

These suggestions are editorial reasoning about the rules, not publisher-endorsed winning percentages or results from a controlled playtest.

Who will enjoy Hitster—and who might not?

Hitster fits social groups that enjoy listening to music together, making quick judgments and discussing familiar songs. It is particularly convenient when participants have varied gaming experience: everyone can understand “older, newer or between” without learning a complicated board state.

It may be a weaker fit for a group that prefers silent strategy, has unreliable phone audio or internet access, or does not want a soundtrack during play. Music familiarity also differs across generations and regions, which is why teams, the Original mode and localized editions can matter.

For alternatives already in the BoardGameArchive library, Just One focuses on cooperative clues, while Codenames gives teams a word-association challenge without an accompanying soundtrack. They serve different group preferences rather than being interchangeable games.

Hitster frequently asked questions

Do you have to guess the exact year in Hitster?

Not in Original mode. Correct placement relative to your existing timeline is enough. Expert mode additionally requires the exact year along with artist and title.

Does your first card count toward ten?

Yes. The initial date-up starting card is part of your timeline. You win when you have ten cards correctly arranged under the rules of your mode.

What if two songs were released in the same year?

Cards with the same printed year may be placed in either order. An opponent cannot steal a correctly placed same-year card by pointing to another equally valid location.

When can you challenge with a token?

Before the active player flips the card to reveal the year. Once the answer is visible, it is too late to initiate a new challenge.

Can you earn a token if you placed the song incorrectly?

Yes, in Original mode. Correctly identifying both title and artist can earn a token even when the chronological guess is wrong, up to the maximum of five tokens.

How many people can play Hitster?

The official US Original product specifies 2–10 players. You may play individually or in teams, subject to your edition’s instructions.

Can you play Hitster without a paid Spotify account?

The publisher describes free or no-account preview options in supported regions. Features differ by country and current app configuration; check the official app’s available setup options.

Can you play without the Hitster cards?

The official game uses its physical QR-coded music cards. A generic playlist by itself does not reproduce the official card and timeline system.

Is Hitster Bingo the same game as Hitster Original?

No. Hitster Bingo is marketed as a separate game mode or product. This guide covers the standard music-timeline rules of Original and its Pro, Expert and cooperative variations.

What if you have never played modern board games?

Start with Original mode and skip tokens for the first practice round. Once everyone understands song order, introduce the two-token setup and challenges.
