Kalypso
Build a floating settlement from salvaged tiles, manage survivors and weather, and play the same core system competitively, cooperatively or solo.
Kalypso is a 1–4 player tile-laying survival game designed by Gilles Turbide and published by Inside Up Games. Earth has been swallowed by rising seas, and players build floating settlements from salvage while trying to keep survivors supplied through storms and scarcity.
The game raised more than CA$390,000 from roughly 3,000 Kickstarter backers. Inside Up Games now lists the retail/preorder edition at $59.99 and says preorder shipments begin in November 2026 after Kickstarter fulfillment.
How Kalypso works
Each round, players draft salvage tiles and add them to a personal floating settlement. Placement determines which structures you can construct, how survivors move and where later tiles can fit.
The settlement is not a simple filled grid. Kalypso intentionally allows unusual shapes, gaps and extensions beyond a conventional boundary, so spatial planning is the central puzzle.
Materials and building
Tiles represent salvage materials such as wood, metal, rubber and seaweed. Grouping compatible material lets you build structures and trigger bonuses.
That creates a chaining system: one tile can improve a material group, unlock a building and then create an additional placement or resource opportunity.
Weather and forecasts
Forecast cards create changing conditions. A settlement that works efficiently under one weather pattern may become vulnerable when the next storm or environmental condition arrives.
This gives placement a defensive dimension: efficient scoring is useful, but resilience matters too.
Survivors, gardens and fishing
Survivors live on the floating platforms and interact with structures and resources. Gardens, nets and open-water gaps can all become part of the settlement economy.
The game therefore rewards building a functioning habitat rather than simply maximizing contiguous tile area.
Competitive, cooperative and solo modes
Inside Up Games explicitly supports all three. Competitive play asks each player to build the strongest settlement, while cooperative play changes the pressure toward shared survival objectives. Solo uses the same spatial and weather systems without requiring another player.
This flexibility is one of Kalypso’s strongest collection arguments: it can serve as a personal puzzle, a cooperative challenge or a conventional competitive tile layer.
Settlement goals and replayability
Modular objectives change what the table values from game to game. Combined with variable forecasts and drafted tiles, they reduce the value of memorizing one ideal opening pattern.
How heavy is it?
BoardGameGeek currently places Kalypso around 2.3/5 complexity. That suggests an accessible medium-weight spatial game rather than a heavy survival simulation.
Release status
Kalypso’s crowdfunding campaign finished with more than 3,000 backers. Inside Up Games currently lists the game as a preorder and says shipments begin in November 2026 after Kickstarter fulfillment.
The game is also part of the SPIEL Essen 2026 preview, so regional availability should broaden through late 2026.
Who may like Kalypso?
Kalypso is a strong fit if you enjoy spatial efficiency, drafting and city-building but want more environmental pressure than a traditional abstract tile game.
It is also attractive for mixed groups because the same box supports solo, cooperative and competitive play.
What to know before ordering
The current Inside Up listing is a preorder, not ordinary in-stock retail. The publisher says preorder shipments begin in November 2026 after Kickstarter fulfillment. That distinction matters because crowdfunding extras and later retail contents should not be assumed to be identical unless the publisher explicitly says so.
For the same reason, this guide focuses on the stable gameplay identity—tile drafting, settlement construction, weather pressure and multiple game modes—rather than copying pledge-level component lists that may not describe every later edition.
Where Kalypso fits
Kalypso is more survival-oriented than a calm habitat puzzle such as Cascadia, while being much lighter and more spatially immediate than a long infrastructure game such as Underwater Cities. Browse the 2026 release tracker for other current titles.
