Start with the complete Paperback and Hardback game guide for setup, turn order and the wider strategy. This page focuses on a specific question rather than repeating the full rules.
Core objective
Paperback builds words to earn buying power for new letters and Fame; final victory points are Fame cards, and the game ends with the last Common card. Hardback accumulates Prestige during play, reaching a target that triggers final-round play.
How a word works
Paperback draws five letters and uses purchased Fame cards as wild letters; the Common letter can help meet word-length targets. Hardback allows ordinary cards to be flipped face down as wilds at the price of forfeiting their printed abilities.
Card powers
Paperback cards grant individual effects, so buying good letters changes your future buying strength. Hardback adds four named genres, with extra genre effects depending on matching cards in a word; Timeless Classics can stay in play and be borrowed by opponents.
Buying and progression
Paperback’s purchasing score is generated from the current word, then spent on letters and Fame. Hardback creates Coins and Prestige from played letters and buys market cards and Ink, offering greater engine variability.
Who should choose Paperback?
Choose Paperback when you want a more straightforward word-forming deck builder where progress is visible through the Fame cards you buy. It may be the easier introduction for players new to this hybrid genre.
Who should choose Hardback?
Choose Hardback when you want more complex combo-building, tactical wild choices, face-up genre synergies and push-your-luck Ink drawing. Both still require comfort with spelling and word validity.
Edition caveat
The Fowers Games Paperback 10th Anniversary version has components and presentation that may differ from older printed rules. Hardback also includes optional solo and co-op modes. Compare the exact edition you own rather than assuming every module is included in every copy.
