Dominion Trash vs Discard vs Gain: Rules Differences Explained
In Dominion, trash, discard and gain are three different game terms. Mixing them up changes how quickly your deck improves.
Discard
When you discard a card, place it face up on your personal discard pile. It remains part of your deck and can return after your discard pile is shuffled to form a new deck.
Trash
When you trash a card, place it in the shared Trash pile. It is no longer part of your deck unless a card effect specifically retrieves something from the Trash.
Gain
When you gain a card, take it from the appropriate pile and put it in your discard pile unless the card or effect tells you to put it somewhere else.
Does gaining mean you can use the card immediately?
Usually no. A normally gained card goes to your discard pile and enters your future deck cycle after shuffling.
Does buying a card count as gaining it?
Yes. A card you buy is gained, so effects that care about gaining can apply when appropriate.
Is trashing the same as removing a card until the end of the turn?
No. Trashing removes the card from your personal deck entirely. Setting aside, revealing and discarding are separate instructions.
Can you look through the Trash?
Yes. Dominion’s rules allow players to inspect the Trash pile.
