How to Play Great Western Trail: Second Edition
Great Western Trail: Second Edition is built around repeated cattle drives to Kansas City. On a normal turn you move your herder forward, resolve the location where you stop, then refill your cattle hand. Over several trips you improve the herd, hire workers, construct buildings and advance your locomotive.

Phase A: move your herder forward
Move at least one step forward along the trail, up to your current movement limit. Empty spaces can be passed. Hazard/outlaw tiles and opponent buildings can impose costs when passed or entered, according to their hand icons and the player-count rules.
Phase B: use the location you reached
If you stop at a neutral building or one of your own buildings, perform its available local actions in the allowed order. Opponent buildings, hazards and other locations restrict what actions you can take, often leaving an auxiliary action instead.
Common actions let you discard cattle for money/effects, hire workers, buy stronger cattle, place or upgrade buildings, advance the locomotive, gain certificates, remove hazards or manipulate your deck.
Cowboys, builders and engineers specialize your economy
- Cowboys improve access to stronger cattle cards.
- Builders unlock stronger private buildings.
- Engineers improve railroad movement and station opportunities.
Workers are hired from the job market. Their cost depends on market position and the action used. Workers placed deep in a row can also create end-game points.
Kansas City uses a special delivery sequence
When your herder reaches Kansas City, stop normal trail movement and resolve the Kansas City subphases in order. Refill the relevant worker/hazard/outlaw markets, determine the value of your current cattle hand using different cattle breeds plus allowed certificates, gain income, then make a delivery by placing an eligible disc on the railroad/city area.
Transport cost depends on the relation between your locomotive and the delivery destination. After the delivery, return your herder to the trail start and continue with an improved deck/board on the next drive.
Phase C: draw back to your hand limit
At the end of your turn, draw cattle cards until you reach the hand limit currently exposed on your player board. Removing discs through deliveries can improve hand size, movement or auxiliary actions.
Game end: job market token leaves the board
The end is triggered during Kansas City when filling the job market causes its token to move off the market. The triggering player keeps the token for 2 VP and finishes that Kansas City sequence; every other player then gets one final turn.
Final scoring covers money, buildings, city crests/deliveries, train stations, hazards, cattle cards, Objective cards, Station Master tiles, developed worker rows, cleared player-board spaces and the job-market token. Highest total wins.
