War of the Ring Victory Conditions: Ring, Corruption & Military VP
War of the Ring has four principal victory routes: two for the Free Peoples and two for the Shadow. Ares Games refreshed the English rulebook and player aid in September 2026; this page follows the Second Edition base game.
Free Peoples Ring victory
The Free Peoples wins if the Ring-bearers complete the quest and destroy the One Ring at the Crack of Doom before the Corruption condition defeats them.
Shadow Ring victory
The Shadow wins immediately if the Ring-bearers’ Corruption reaches the defeat threshold specified by the Second Edition rules.
Free Peoples military victory
The Free Peoples can also win by capturing enough Shadow-controlled settlements to reach the military victory-point threshold.
Shadow military victory
The Shadow wins by controlling enough Free Peoples Cities and Strongholds to reach its military victory-point threshold.
Strongholds and Cities have different values
Military victory points come from eligible enemy settlements, with Strongholds worth more than ordinary Cities under the base scoring system.
Check immediate victory timing
Victory conditions are checked at the timings specified by the rulebook. A side does not necessarily get to finish unrelated actions after an immediate win condition has been met.
Expansions can change the strategic route, not the base thresholds
Lords of Middle-earth, Warriors of Middle-earth, Kings of Middle-earth and other expansions add systems but are outside this base-game guide.
