Cartographers Strategy: Shape Placement, Ambushes & Seasonal Planning
Editorial analysis: Cartographers rewards shapes that score now without damaging the two seasons that follow. Every placement should be judged against the current pair of goals and the goals that will return later.
Plan around the scoring cycle
A goal that scores this season may also score next season or return later in the year. Build toward overlaps between adjacent goals rather than maximizing one criterion in isolation.
Use awkward terrain to fill awkward spaces
Large clean shapes are easy to place early. Save flexible small shapes for narrow gaps, mountain edges and monster cleanup instead of wasting them in open space.
Treat mountains as anchors
Filling around a mountain can generate a coin while also completing clusters or rows. Build toward several scoring purposes at once whenever possible.
Contain monsters quickly when the penalty is large
A monster shape with many exposed edges can cost reputation every season it remains open. Prioritize the empty adjacent squares that are easiest to fill with likely future shapes.
Avoid one-cell holes
Single isolated gaps are difficult to fill unless a one-square option appears. When placing polyominoes, preserve larger contiguous empty regions that can accept multiple future shapes.
Late winter is pure score conversion
There is no future season after winter. Stop preserving elegant open areas and place for immediate D+A scoring, coins and monster-penalty reduction.
