Castle Combo Strategy: Tableau Position, Messenger & Resource Timing
Editorial analysis: Every Castle Combo card has two values: what it does immediately and what its scoring scroll will be worth after nine turns. Strong play balances both.
Plan central spaces early
The center card participates in both its row and column and often interacts with more positional scoring conditions. Reserve central flexibility for characters with broad synergy.
Do not overpay for a powerful immediate effect
A card that returns Gold now can still be weak if its final scroll scores almost nothing in your grid. Estimate end-game value before spending a large share of your budget.
Keys buy access, not just flexibility
Spend a Key when moving or refreshing the Messenger creates a materially better recruit. Unused Keys are worth points, so a marginal refresh has a real opportunity cost.
Build shield sets deliberately
Many scoring scrolls reference shield types, missing types, pairs or triples. Once several cards point toward the same shield structure, prioritize recruits that reinforce it.
Keep enough Gold for turns 7–9
A nearly perfect tableau can collapse if you cannot afford the final scoring card. Avoid converting all early Gold into medium-value recruits without a replenishment plan.
Final turns: calculate, don’t speculate
With only one or two spaces left, compare exact scoring changes from each visible character, including its row/column impact, purse capacity and the value of Keys you might spend reaching it.
