Lost Ruins of Arnak Strategy: Research, Exploration & Deck Efficiency

Editorial analysis: Arnak is won by converting temporary resources into permanent progress before the five-round clock runs out. Research, exploration and deck improvement all compete for the same currencies, so the best move usually advances more than one system.

Keep the deck lean enough to cycle

Items and Artifacts are only useful if you draw them. Buying too many average cards can dilute powerful effects. Prefer cards that solve a recurring resource problem or produce travel icons your current deck lacks.

Research has compounding rewards

Moving early can secure stronger assistants and track bonuses while keeping the notebook legal beneath the magnifying glass. Research is not only end-game VP; it also improves the economy during the remaining rounds.

Explore when the site reward solves the next problem

A new site costs travel and compasses, then may create a Guardian cost. Explore when its likely reward or idol gives resources you can immediately convert into research/cards rather than merely for the novelty of opening the map.

Guardians are strongest when defeated efficiently

Five VP is meaningful, but paying awkward resources just to clear a Guardian can stall the engine. Target Guardians whose cost overlaps resources you already produce or whose boon enables a strong follow-up action.

Assistants are action compression

An assistant that repeatedly converts common resources into scarce ones can replace several weak card actions. Upgrades are especially valuable if obtained early enough to trigger across multiple rounds.

Idol slots are not free

Using an idol for an immediate slot reward sacrifices the printed end-game points of that empty slot. Take the reward when it enables a stronger conversion—such as an important research step—not automatically.

Round five is for conversion, not engine building

Late purchases may never cycle. Shift toward research, temple tiles, Guardians and printed VP on cards already accessible. Fear left in the deck is negative points, so clean up obvious penalties when the cost is low.
