Tapestry Strategy: Track Efficiency, Income Timing & Capital City

Tapestry is a resource-efficiency race disguised as a civilization game. The central question is how many high-value Advance turns you can buy between your five fixed Income turns—and how much each advance improves the next era.

1. Measure advances per era

Resources are turns. Before taking Income, ask whether one more Advance creates enough value to justify spending the remaining resource. Ending an era with several unused resources usually means you left tempo on the table.

2. Do not advance a track only for identity

Your civilization may suggest a direction, but track benefits should still solve current needs. A balanced route can be stronger than forcing Military, Science, Technology or Exploration when its next space is inefficient for your position.

3. Plan tier crossings

Landmarks are limited to the first player reaching their qualifying tier. If a landmark would complete capital-city rows or columns, the timing benefit can justify prioritizing that track before an opponent takes it.

4. Build the capital city deliberately

Do not scatter Buildings and landmarks randomly. Preserve shapes that make future row/column completion possible. Large landmarks can be awkward, so consider their footprint before committing surrounding spaces.

5. Improve recurring income early

A Building gained before an early Income turn can expose a resource or scoring icon that pays repeatedly. The same Building gained just before the fifth Income turn has far less time to compound.

6. Time your Tapestry card to the era

An era-long ability is only as valuable as the actions you can take while it is active. Choose the card that matches your likely Advance sequence rather than the card with the flashiest isolated effect.

7. Upgrade Technology with a payoff in mind

Technology is strongest when its upgraded benefit arrives before it is needed. Use Income upgrades to set up the next era instead of improving a card after its ideal timing has passed.

8. Watch asynchronous eras

Players take Income at different times. A rival may enter a new era while you continue advancing. Use that information to judge landmark races, map pressure and whether an early-era bonus is still available.

9. Convert late resources into points

Your fifth Income turn ends your actions. Before taking it, spend resources on advances that generate direct points, achievements, map value or other final scoring rather than preserving an economy that will never run again.

10. Use achievements as tempo bonuses

If an achievement is within reach, its declining point spaces reward getting there earlier. Do not derail your whole engine for it, but include the race when comparing two otherwise similar Advance paths.

Common strategic mistakes

  • Taking Income with too many usable resources left.
  • Overcommitting to one track because of theme rather than efficiency.
  • Ignoring capital-city geometry until landmarks no longer fit well.
  • Playing a Tapestry card that does not match the actions available in that era.
  • Entering the fifth Income turn before converting remaining resources into value.
