Race for the Galaxy Scoring & Game End: 12 Cards, VP Chips and Ties

Race for the Galaxy ends at the end of a round when either a tableau reaches the card threshold or the victory-point supply runs out. The player who triggers the finish does not automatically win; every player totals their complete score after the round.

End trigger 1: 12 or more face-up tableau cards

If any player has 12 or more face-up cards in their tableau at the end of the round, the game ends. A player can exceed 12 by placing both a development and a world in the final round.

End trigger 2: the VP-chip pool runs out

If the last victory-point chip is awarded during a Consume phase, the game also ends after the current round. If the printed supply is insufficient to award all VP earned in that final Consume, use the additional VP chips/change described by the rules so nobody loses earned points.

Final score has three main parts

  1. World and development VP: add the printed VP values of face-up cards in your tableau.
  2. VP chips: add all victory-point chips collected during play.
  3. 6-cost development bonuses: calculate any end-game VP formulas shown by those developments.

Highest total wins

The player with the most VP wins. A player with fewer tableau cards can still win through VP chips and variable-value developments, so tableau size by itself is not a score.

Tiebreak: cards in hand plus goods on worlds

If players tie for the highest VP, compare the combined number of cards remaining in hand after the normal end-of-round discard and goods remaining on worlds. The tied player with the higher combined total wins.

If that total is also tied, the tied players share the victory.

Base-game scoring excludes expansion systems

Goals, prestige and other expansion-specific scoring are not part of this Second Edition base-game guide. Add those only when playing the expansion that introduces them.
