Pandemic vs Forbidden Island: Which Cooperative Game Should You Play?
Pandemic and Forbidden Island are both cooperative designs associated with Matt Leacock, but Pandemic is the deeper crisis-management game while Forbidden Island is shorter and easier to teach.
Quick comparison
| Pandemic | Forbidden Island | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2–4 | 2–4 |
| Play time | About 45 min | About 30 min |
| Main threat | Disease outbreaks | Sinking island |
| Objective | Discover cures | Collect 4 treasures and escape |
| Learning load | Medium-light | Light |
Pandemic has more systems to manage
The team tracks four diseases, outbreaks, epidemics, city cards, research stations and role powers. The Infection deck also creates recurring hotspots through Intensify.
Forbidden Island is more immediate
The map itself disappears as tiles flood and sink. Players race to collect treasure sets and escape before critical locations vanish.
Difficulty
Both games support adjustable challenge. Pandemic’s pressure comes from cascading outbreaks and a limited Player Deck; Forbidden Island’s Water Rise system makes the map deteriorate faster.
Which fits your group?
- Pandemic: better if you want a deeper cooperative puzzle with more long-term planning.
- Forbidden Island: better for families, newer players and shorter sessions.
