How to Play Sagrada: Dice Placement, Tools & Scoring

Sagrada is a dice-drafting puzzle played over ten rounds. Each round, players take two turns in a snake draft, choosing dice from a shared pool and placing them into stained-glass windows. Every die must obey the printed space requirement plus the game’s adjacency rule: two edge-adjacent dice may never share the same color or the same value.

Set up three tools, three public objectives and a player-count dice bag

Place the Round Track in the center. Reveal three Tool Cards and three Public Objective Cards.

Put the correct number of dice in the bag:

  • 2 players: 50 dice, 10 of each color.
  • 3 players: 70 dice, 14 of each color.
  • 4 players: all 90 dice.

Each player receives a Player Board, two Window Pattern cards, one secret Private Objective and a matching Score Marker. Choose one of the four available window patterns shown across the fronts and backs of the two cards.

Your chosen pattern’s difficulty determines how many Favor Tokens you begin with.

Each round uses a forward-and-back snake draft

The Start Player draws and rolls 2 dice per player + 1 extra die:

  • 2 players: 5 dice
  • 3 players: 7 dice
  • 4 players: 9 dice

Starting with the Start Player, everyone takes one turn clockwise. Then the order reverses and comes back counterclockwise, ending with the Start Player.

With three players A, B and C, the order is A–B–C–C–B–A. Each player therefore gets two opportunities to draft a die each round.

A legal die must satisfy three placement rules

  • First placement: your first die must be placed on an edge or corner space.
  • Later placement: every later die must touch an existing die by an edge or corner.
  • Pattern requirement: a colored space requires that color, a numbered space requires that value, and a white space accepts any color/value.

Then apply Sagrada’s Golden Rule: two dice sharing an edge may never have the same color or the same value. Diagonal neighbors may match color, value or both.

If you take a die and cannot place it legally, return it to the Dice Pool and end your turn.

No tool can break the edge-adjacency Golden Rule

Some tools can ignore a printed color or value requirement, change a die value, or move already placed dice.

They still cannot create two edge-adjacent dice with the same color or the same value. The remastered rulebook explicitly states that nothing in the game can break this rule.

If an illegal placement is discovered later, remove dice of your choice until the window becomes legal again. Removed dice leave the game, and the resulting empty spaces still hurt your final score.

Tools cost one favor token first, then two

On your turn, you may use one Tool Card if its timing allows it.

If the Tool has no Favor Tokens on it, place 1 token there to use it. If it already has any tokens, the cost is 2 tokens. The cost never rises above 2.

Resolve the Tool exactly as written. A tool that lets you move a die still requires the resulting position to obey all rules the card does not explicitly waive.

After both turns, move the remaining dice to the Round Track

When every player has taken two turns, place the remaining dice on the Round Track. Use one die to cover the number of the completed round.

Pass the Dice Bag left; that player becomes the Start Player for the next round.

After round 10, proceed to scoring.

Remastered scoring uses public goals, private color and window completion

  • Public Objectives: score every objective separately according to its card.
  • Private Objective: score 3 points for every die in your window matching the specified color, regardless of value.
  • Favor Tokens: add 1 point per unused token.
  • Open Spaces: subtract 1 point per empty space.

Row and column objectives only score completed rows or columns with no empty spaces. A die may count once within a particular objective and can also count again for a different objective.

The highest total wins. Ties are broken by Private Objective points, then unused Favor Tokens, then by the player latest in the final round’s turn order.

Remastered solo play uses four dice per round and the Old Master

Solo play uses the normal setup as a base but adds a selected number of Tool Cards according to difficulty.

Each round, roll four dice and take two turns. You can use a Tool by paying Favor Tokens normally or by spending a die from the Dice Pool whose color matches the Tool Card. If you pay with a die, remove both that die and Tool from the game.

Dice left on the Round Track form the Old Master’s score by their face values. Score your own window normally except each empty space costs −3 points. You win only if your total exceeds the Old Master’s.

Common Sagrada Remastered rules mistakes

  • Repeating a color or number edge-to-edge: this is never legal, even with a Tool.
  • Forgetting diagonal adjacency counts for connection: later dice may connect by a corner.
  • Using Classic private scoring: Remastered scores 3 points per matching-color die, not the sum of those die values.
  • Scoring incomplete row/column objectives: those objectives require the entire row or column to be filled.
  • Applying multiplayer empty-space penalties to solo: multiplayer is −1 per empty space; remastered solo is −3.
