Choose by what you want from a short game
Kingdomino
Draft domino-like terrain tiles, connect matching landscapes and score terrain areas by multiplying size by crowns.
You want the shortest strategy game in this shortlist with a clear spatial puzzle.
You want a long engine or heavy player interaction.
Sky Team
Pilot and co-pilot silently place dice into a shared cockpit to control axis, speed, traffic and landing systems.
You want a complete cooperative puzzle in about 20 minutes.
You want open communication or more than two players.
Love Letter
Draw one card, play one card and use a tiny character deck to infer opponents’ hands and survive the round.
You want almost no setup and fast rematches.
You want a board that develops visibly over the whole session.
The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
Complete underwater missions through cooperative trick-taking and restricted communication.
Your group likes short missions and card-game inference.
Trick-taking terminology would be a major barrier.
Jaipur
Take goods and camels from a shared market, then time your sales before the highest-value tokens disappear.
You need a tactical two-player game that resets quickly.
You need the same box to support a group later.
Dominion
Buy cards into a personal deck, then use repeated draw cycles to build increasingly efficient turns and score victory cards.
You want meaningful engine construction inside a short publisher time range.
You want a strong board theme or very low card-text overhead.
7 Wonders
Draft simultaneously, build resources and Wonder stages, then score military, science, commerce and civic development.
You want a full table making decisions at the same time.
You want the absolute simplest first teach.
Sushi Go Party!
Choose one sushi card, pass the remaining hand and build scoring combinations from a customizable menu.
You want one 30-minute game that scales all the way to eight players.
You want deeper long-term planning.
Codenames
Give one-word clues to connect multiple words while steering teammates away from enemy agents and the assassin.
You want a very short team game for four or more people.
Your group is smaller or language differences make wordplay difficult.
King of Tokyo
Roll and reroll dice to attack, heal, score and gain energy while giant monsters fight for control of Tokyo.
You want 30 minutes of dramatic rolls and direct interaction.
Your group dislikes luck or player elimination.
Play time is not teach time
A 20- or 30-minute publisher play time does not mean the full first experience fits inside that same window. Teaching, setup and early-game thinking can add time. This is especially relevant for Dominion and 7 Wonders, whose turn structures are quick once understood but whose cards, symbols and scoring require a more substantial first explanation.
Current quick-game guides make the same distinction between a short session and an instant teach. The useful search intent is “what can I actually play in a short window?” rather than “what has almost no rules.”
Quick board game questions
What is the fastest strategy game here?
Kingdomino is listed at 15 minutes and still gives players meaningful tile-selection and spatial decisions.
What quick game works for a large group?
Codenames supports 4–8+ players at 15 minutes, while Sushi Go Party! supports 2–8 at 30 minutes and 7 Wonders supports 3–7 at 30 minutes.
What quick cooperative game should I choose?
Sky Team is designed exactly for two players. The Crew: Mission Deep Sea supports 3–5. Forbidden Island is another cooperative option in the archive at 30 minutes.
Why is Azul not included?

How these under-30-minute recommendations were selected
We filtered the 100-game archive for titles whose current recorded publisher maximum is 30 minutes or less. That produced 29 eligible games. We then selected 10 that represent different player counts and game styles rather than filling the page with several similar two-player duels.
Time ranges, player counts and game scope come from the linked edition-specific hubs. Suitability comments are editorial analysis rather than controlled timing tests. Checked September 16, 2026. Read the editorial methodology.
