Finspan vs Wyrmspan: Light Ocean Engine or Heavy Dragon Strategy?
Choose Finspan if you want a light 45–60 minute engine builder built around an ocean mat and fish development. Choose Wyrmspan if you want a heavy 90-minute engine with cave excavation, dragon placement and more interconnected long-term planning.

Finspan vs Wyrmspan at a glance

| Players | 1–5 | 1–5 |
| Publisher duration | 45–60 min | 90 min |

| Expansion path | Sharks & Reefs | Dragon Academy |
Both use layered personal boards, but the weight is very different
Finspan puts fish into sunlight, twilight and midnight zones. Diving through the ocean triggers benefits, while eggs can develop into young and groups of young can become schools. The systems are visible and the game is classified light.
Wyrmspan also develops three rows, but those rows must first be excavated before dragons can occupy them. Exploration then activates the cave system. This adds capacity management and a heavier sequence of decisions before the engine is fully operational.
Finspan is more forgiving of a short session
At 45–60 minutes, Finspan gives repeated powers enough time to matter without demanding a long evening. Its four-week structure keeps the finish predictable and the decision load comparatively light.
Wyrmspan’s 90-minute target gives its cave network more room to develop. It also makes early infrastructure decisions more consequential because poor excavation or card order can affect several later explorations.
The expansion paths reinforce the same distinction
Finspan’s Sharks & Reefs expansion adds coral overlays, new fish and reef-focused systems while keeping the base game’s light classification and listed duration.
Wyrmspan’s Dragon Academy expansion adds content to an already heavy 90-minute framework. If expansion purchases are likely, the base game’s preferred complexity level is therefore the more important first decision.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Finspan for a light engine, shorter sessions and a clear ocean-board progression.
- Choose Wyrmspan for heavy strategy, cave-capacity planning and a longer development arc.
- Choose Finspan for mixed-experience groups when accessibility matters more than system depth.
- Choose Wyrmspan for experienced groups that actively want a denser optimization puzzle.
