Wyrmspan

Excavate cave spaces, attract dragons and explore a growing sanctuary in Stonemaier’s standalone dragon-themed engine builder.

♟1–5 Players◷90 Minutes▣2024⚙Heavy◆Dragon Engine

Excavate cave cards, attract dragons into those spaces and send your explorer through the growing sanctuary to activate abilities.

Three cave systems develop in parallel, each supporting dragon powers and exploration. Resources, cards and eggs feed an engine whose value depends on how often you can trigger its strongest spaces.

Why We Love It

Wyrmspan builds on the satisfaction of tableau engines while making excavation part of development. Before attracting dragons, you must create cave space, so expansion and engine growth compete for the same limited actions.

What is Wyrmspan?

Wyrmspan, designed by Connie Vogelmann, turns the familiar idea of a personal creature engine into a network of caves and dragons. Players excavate spaces, entice dragons to occupy them and send an adventurer through their sanctuary.

Stonemaier lists the game for 1–5 players with a 90-minute duration and classifies it as heavy relative to its catalog.

How the game works

Your sanctuary begins with three excavated spaces. Over the game you create more cave spaces, play dragons into them and explore cave rows to trigger chained benefits.

The Dragon Guild adds a shared progression track, while objectives and card abilities create multiple scoring directions.

The decisions that define it

The main efficiency question is whether to spend resources expanding capacity, filling existing caves or exploring an engine that is already productive.

Because exploration can chain multiple card effects, card order and cave development matter together.

Who is it for?

Choose Wyrmspan if you like Wingspan-style engine growth but want a longer, heavier system with more explicit spatial development.

Choose Wingspan when you prefer the original habitat-action structure and its established expansion ecosystem.
