What is Calico?
Calico is Kevin Russ’s quilt-building puzzle. Each player fills a personal hex grid with patch tiles defined by both color and pattern.
Personal design goals, cat requirements and color groups overlap, so one tile can contribute to several scoring systems—or make a future goal impossible.
How the game works
Turns are intentionally simple: place one patch tile from your hand into an empty quilt space, then refill your hand from the small shared market. Completed color groups can earn buttons, while specific pattern arrangements attract cats.
The challenge comes from the fixed board: every placement is permanent and the quilt eventually fills completely.
The decisions that define it
Calico rewards keeping several scoring routes alive at once. A tile that perfectly satisfies one design goal can restrict the pattern or color needed by an adjacent goal.
Shared-market drafting also matters because taking a patch changes what opponents can access next.
Who is it for?
Choose Calico if you like tight spatial optimization and are comfortable with increasingly constrained late-game placements.
