Excursions: A Galactic Cruise Game

Plan space vacations, upgrade your company, attract the right guests and launch cruises in a faster, smaller and more simultaneous strategy game set in the Galactic Cruise universe.

♟1–6 Players ◷60–90 Minutes ▣2027 Release ⚙Action Selection ◆Standalone Game

Excursions: A Galactic Cruise Game is a standalone strategy game designed by Ben Rosset and published by Kinson Key Games. It shares the setting, iconography and some ideas from Galactic Cruise, but replaces the heavier worker-placement structure with rotating action selection and simultaneous follow actions.

The Kickstarter launched on October 6, 2026 and is scheduled to end on October 30. By October 9, live campaign tracking showed roughly $330,000 from more than 2,800 backers, more than ten times the original $30,000 goal.

Why it stands out

The active player chooses one action, but everybody gets to act. That keeps six-player games moving while still creating tension: another player may select an action that is merely acceptable for you, forcing you to adapt rather than wait for a perfectly optimized turn.

Why this is a strong search opportunity

Excursions is currently high on BoardGameGeek’s Hotness and inherits awareness from Galactic Cruise, which already has a substantial hobby audience.

The game also creates clear search intent around Excursions vs Galactic Cruise, Standard vs Deluxe, solo mode, six-player performance, rotating space-station actions, cruise cards, developments, upgrades and Kickstarter pricing.

How Excursions works

Excursions is a variable-setup action-selection game. Players manage two ships, collect guests, build developments, unlock upgrades, schedule cruise cards and launch vacations for points.

The game is played around a rotating space-station board. On each turn, one player becomes active and chooses an action. Everyone then resolves an action simultaneously.

The active player gains an additional bonus whose strength depends on the current position of the rotating station. After the turn, the station rotates and a new player becomes active.

The seven actions

The main action choices are:

  • Fund — gain money.
  • Acquire — gain food and/or fuel.
  • Develop — place a Development into the shared network.
  • Schedule — gain and play Cruise cards.
  • Upgrade — unlock abilities on your player board.
  • Advertise — draw guests for your ships or lounge.
  • Launch — send a prepared cruise into space.

There is also a central fallback action that provides a basic resource, money, ad or card when the normal choices do not fit your plan.

How the follow system works

The active player chooses the action for the turn, but every player participates.

Normally, non-active players take the chosen action. However, if you have built a Development between two action spaces, you can use that connection to take an adjacent action instead.

This makes Developments strategically important because they reduce how dependent you are on other players choosing exactly what you want.

Editorial strategy principle: a strong Development is not only worth its printed reward — it increases your future action flexibility.

Why the space station rotates

The rotating station changes the bonus attached to each action.

The active player therefore evaluates two things at once: which action they want everybody to take and how valuable the current bonus is.

A weaker action can become attractive if its active-player bonus is temporarily strong, while a normally valuable action may be less efficient in the current rotation.

How cruise itineraries work

Cruise cards are multi-use cards. You can place them into an itinerary next to one of your ships, or discard them for the resource shown at the top.

An itinerary contains excursion stops and eventually a face-down Return Home card. To launch, you need a ship, pilot, at least one guest and enough food and fuel to cover the trip.

Once launched, the ship advances when pilot icons appear on the rotating station.

What happens during a cruise?

Cruises can contain three types of stops:

  • Days in Space — produce bonuses based on the guests aboard.
  • Excursions — score VP when your guest mix matches the card.
  • Return Home — score points, return the pilot and convert completed travel into long-term funding benefits.

Ads can temporarily make a guest count as another type, which lets you rescue an itinerary that would otherwise miss an important excursion bonus.

How guests work

Guests are drawn from a shared cloth bag and come in different types.

The Advertise action helps attract them, while upgrades can increase your capacity or improve the way you use them.

The challenge is to match your passenger mix to the excursions you have scheduled rather than simply filling every available seat.

Why build Developments?

Developments are placed into the shared action network.

They can provide immediate build bonuses, improve scoring and — most importantly — connect adjacent actions so your future follow turns become more flexible.

Because other players may occupy useful spaces first, Development timing is one of the more interactive parts of the game.

How upgrades change your company

Every player begins with upgrade tiles covering stronger abilities on their personal board.

Paying to remove an upgrade reveals the improved ability underneath. Examples include better resource conversion, improved guest handling and more efficient cruise operations.

The game rewards specialization, but you also score for unlocking multiple upgrades, so there is tension between deep focus and broad improvement.

Company Goals and Secret Goals

Three Company Goals are available to everyone.

When you meet a goal, you gain funding bonuses, and being first can provide additional victory points.

Players also receive Secret Goals that score privately at the end of the game. A Secret Goal can alternatively be discarded during play for a bonus ship advance, creating an interesting decision between immediate tempo and final scoring.

How does Excursions end?

The end is triggered when a player reaches or passes 50 victory points.

After the triggering turn, there is one final round where every player effectively receives a final active-player opportunity.

Final scoring then includes remaining resources, upgrades, Developments, Company Goals and completed Secret Goals.

What is the First Game setup?

The board has a dedicated First Game side.

Instead of drafting the full action, technology and goal setup, the teaching side preprints much of the structure. First Game cards also give each player starting resources, a Development placement and an upgrade path.

This is designed to reduce setup and decision overload without changing the basic flow of the game.

Does Excursions have solo play?

Yes. Excursions is officially listed for 1–6 players.

Kinson Key Games developed a dedicated solo mode rather than simply asking one player to simulate several companies.

The exact final solo procedures are still subject to change because the game remains in development, but solo is part of the advertised core product rather than a separate expansion.

Does Excursions really work with six players?

The design is specifically built around simultaneous actions to avoid the downtime normally associated with a six-player Eurogame.

Every player does something on every active player’s turn. At five or six players, non-active players also use a Bonus token that occasionally lets them claim the active-player bonus.

Preview coverage suggests that the simultaneous structure keeps full-player-count games within roughly the same 60–90 minute target.

RelationshipStandalone reimplementationOriginal game

The important point is that Excursions is not an expansion. You do not need Galactic Cruise to play it.

Why is Excursions called a reimplementation?

Kinson Key Games considers Excursions a reimplementation because it preserves several recognizable concepts — Developments, guests, cruises, upgrades and retro-futurist tourism — while replacing the underlying turn structure.

The publisher itself describes it as lighter and more approachable rather than as a replacement for Galactic Cruise.

If you already own Galactic Cruise, the decision is therefore less about duplicate content and more about whether you want a shorter, higher-player-count interpretation of the same universe.

Excursions Kickstarter pledges

EditionCampaign priceMain difference
Standard Edition$39Complete retail-version gameplay
Deluxe Edition$59Premium component upgrades including dual-layer player boards and wooden Developments

The campaign FAQ says there are no gameplay Kickstarter exclusives. The campaign discount itself is exclusive, but the publisher deliberately avoided locking important content behind crowdfunding.

Standard vs Deluxe: which should you choose?

The $39 Standard Edition contains the complete game and is the best reference point for gameplay-first buyers.

The $59 Deluxe Edition improves tactile presentation. Prototype materials show dual-layer player boards and wooden Developments where Standard uses simpler components.

Because no gameplay content is being withheld from Standard, the extra $20 should be treated as a component-quality decision rather than a completeness decision.

How successful is the Kickstarter?

The campaign has a $30,000 goal and funded rapidly after launching on October 6.

By October 9, Tabletop Analytics showed roughly $333,000 and 2,800+ backers.

That makes Excursions one of the more visible tabletop campaigns running in early October 2026, but crowdfunding momentum should not be treated as proof of final quality.

Are there stretch goals or Kickstarter exclusives?

Kinson Key Games says there are no traditional stretch goals.

Instead, the campaign will reveal content over time.

The publisher also says it deliberately avoided gameplay Kickstarter exclusives because it does not want later buyers to be permanently locked out of game content.

What languages are available?

The Kickstarter itself is English only.

Kinson Key Games says localized retail editions will follow through language partners after the campaign.

Because Excursions is relatively icon-driven, language dependence should be lower than in a narrative-heavy game, but the rules and campaign materials are still English.

How do VAT and regional shipping work?

The campaign FAQ states that EU VAT will be collected in the pledge manager and EU orders will ship from Germany.

UK VAT will also be collected in the pledge manager, with UK fulfillment from within the UK.

Canada, Australia and New Zealand have their own regional tax arrangements, while other destinations may owe taxes at delivery.

When will Excursions release?

The game is currently listed as a 2027 release.

The Kickstarter closes on October 30, 2026. Kinson Key Games has not provided one universally reliable month in the public sources checked for this guide, so BoardGameArchive is using the confirmed 2027 window rather than inventing a more precise fulfillment date.

Who may like Excursions?

Excursions is a strong fit for groups that like medium-weight Euros but want everyone involved on every turn.

It is especially interesting for Galactic Cruise fans who want a shorter game or need support for five or six players.

It may be less suitable if you dislike other players influencing which action you can efficiently take, prefer low-variance private planning, or specifically want the heavier worker-placement puzzle of Galactic Cruise.

Five early strategy principles

  • Build Development connections early. Flexibility on follow turns compounds over the whole game.
  • Do not launch with the wrong guests just because a ship is ready. Excursion matching can be worth more than pure speed.
  • Use Cruise cards as resources when the itinerary value is weak. Hoarding every card slows your economy.
  • Watch the rotating bonus before choosing your active action. Timing can turn an ordinary action into a premium turn.
  • Respect the 50-point race. Once somebody approaches the threshold, long-term upgrades become less valuable than immediate scoring.

Six things to know before backing

  • Excursions is standalone. Galactic Cruise is not required.
  • The $39 Standard pledge contains the complete gameplay.
  • Deluxe is mainly a component upgrade.
  • There are no traditional stretch goals. Campaign reveals replace them.
  • The Kickstarter is English only. Localized editions are planned later.
  • 2027 is the reliable release window. Do not assume a specific month until the publisher confirms it.
