Oil Rock
Build an oil empire through a rotating worker-placement wheel, drilling, refining, railway expansion, reputation and tightly connected industrial upgrades.
Oil Rock is a heavy economic eurogame designed by Marco Piola Caselli and published by Cranio Creations. Set during Pennsylvania’s early oil boom, it puts 2–4 players in charge of competing companies that drill wells, refine oil, expand rail networks, establish offices and improve their industrial engines.
The central idea is a rotating action wheel. Workers and managers compete for action timing while each company simultaneously develops a personal production board and a shared geographic network. Cranio currently sells Oil Rock as a preorder and lists October 2026 as the planned day-one window.

What do you do in Oil Rock?
You are trying to turn an early oil company into the strongest industrial network on the board. That means more than producing barrels. Drills increase extraction, refineries improve conversion, turbines strengthen production, trains and offices extend territorial influence, and improvements create additional efficiency.
The systems are intentionally interconnected. A refinery upgrade is more valuable if your extraction and energy systems can feed it; map expansion matters more if it opens regions your engine can exploit; reputation is useful because it affects both timing and character development.
The rotating action wheel
The action wheel is Oil Rock’s defining mechanism. Instead of a fixed menu that remains identical throughout the round, action availability changes as the wheel rotates. This forces players to value not only which action they want, but when they can reach it efficiently.
Published rules discussions also distinguish ordinary workers from higher-value managers, which can interact with the wheel differently. That creates competition around adjacency and timing rather than simple “take the strongest empty space” worker placement.
Drilling and extracting oil
Drill development controls how effectively your company can exploit oil wells. Increasing drill depth improves the extraction side of the economy and also contributes to the broader development race.
The important strategic point is that extraction is only one link in the chain. Overbuilding drilling capacity without enough refining, power or useful demand can leave expensive infrastructure underused.
Refineries and turbines
Your personal board holds refinery and turbine development. Refineries are arranged in ascending order, while turbines can amplify adjacent refinery bonuses. That gives the industrial engine a spatial component instead of making upgrades purely linear.
Placement therefore matters twice: you want the immediate refinery benefit, but you also want a layout that makes later turbine upgrades efficient.
Railways, offices and the shared map
Oil Rock also asks companies to expand across a shared map. Trains move through the network, offices establish a company’s presence and region access can unlock new advantages.
Because every player develops on the same map, geography creates interaction even when players are not directly attacking one another. A route or city can become more valuable simply because another company is about to claim the same opportunity.
Reputation and character development
The Reputation track is not just an end-game scoring track. It also affects turn order and improves the ability of your historical character. Character development therefore changes how effectively your company operates during the game.
That makes reputation a tempo resource as well as a point source. A reputation advance can be worth taking earlier than its raw VP value suggests if it changes turn order or upgrades an ability for multiple future rounds.
Four rounds, nine phases
Cranio’s designer diary describes Oil Rock as a four-round game, with each round broken into nine phases. These include action-wheel rotation, character income, oil extraction, refining, milestone resolution and turn-order determination.
The four-round horizon is strategically important. Investments that pay back repeatedly are strongest when established early; by the final round, an upgrade must often justify itself through immediate points or a one-time efficiency gain.
Milestones and variable objectives
Milestone tiles create shared objectives that change from game to game. They alter the value of actions during particular rounds and make a rigid opening less reliable.
For example, infrastructure that is normally a medium-term investment may become immediately efficient when a milestone rewards it. Strong play therefore requires balancing your personal engine with the temporary incentives visible to everyone.
How scoring works
Published design material identifies several scoring routes, including office presence, drill development, refineries and turbine adjacency, reputation, improvements and character-related end-game effects.
The systems are connected closely enough that “specialize in one thing and ignore everything else” is unlikely to be a complete plan. Efficient specialization still needs enough extraction, refining, territory and timing support to function.
Early strategy principles
These are editorial deductions from the published system rather than claims of a solved competitive meta:
- Price upgrades by remaining rounds. A strong engine investment in round one is not automatically strong in round four.
- Treat the wheel as a timing puzzle. The best action is often the one that preserves access to a stronger sequence later.
- Do not isolate production systems. Drills, refining, turbines and map access need to support one another.
- Reputation can repay before scoring. Turn order and character upgrades make early reputation more valuable than end-game VP alone suggests.
- Use milestones to bend your plan, not destroy it. A temporary bonus is valuable when it fits an engine you already want to build.
Are the Oil Rock rules available?
Yes. BoardGameGeek currently lists two files uploaded by the official BGGCranioCreations account: Oil Rock — Official Rulebook ENG and Oil Rock — Rules Appendix ENG. Both were uploaded in September 2026.
That means the game is now far enough along for rules-based research. However, this page is a broad game guide rather than a rulebook rewrite. Exact setup quantities, action-space wording, icon references and edge cases should be resolved against those official files.
How heavy is Oil Rock?
BoardGameGeek’s early complexity voting currently sits around 4/5, although the sample is still small before wide release. That fits the structure: the game combines contested worker placement, timing on a changing wheel, a personal spatial engine, shared map development and several scoring routes.
Cranio itself lists 90 minutes, so the intended experience appears to be a relatively concentrated heavy euro rather than a three-hour sandbox.
What’s in the box?
Cranio’s current component list includes the central board, two gears, 24 Improvement cards, 12 Region tiles, 17 Action tiles, railway bonuses, patents, milestones, 45 oil barrels, resources, tools, coal, four personal boards, managers, secretaries, engineers, trains, offices, refinery tiles, drill tiles, extra-action tiles, turbines, scoring markers, character notebooks and an energy reminder.
The component density reflects the number of subsystems, but the game is still presented as one integrated economic design rather than a campaign or scenario box.
Oil Rock release date and preorder status
As of 7 October 2026, Cranio Creations lists Oil Rock as a preorder at €59.99 and states “DAY ONE expected: October 2026.” The publisher warns that estimated arrival timing can change.
BoardGameGeek lists Oil Rock as a 2026 game and the title is currently receiving substantial attention ahead of SPIEL Essen. Treat October as the publisher’s current launch window rather than a guaranteed same-day retail date in every country.
Who may like Oil Rock?
Oil Rock is likely to appeal to experienced euro players who enjoy highly connected economic systems, contested action timing and infrastructure development. The action wheel gives it a stronger timing identity than a standard worker-placement game, while the refinery/turbine board adds a personal spatial puzzle.
It is a weaker fit for players seeking low-interaction engine building, a short learning curve or a dedicated solo mode. The published player count is 2–4.
