Wingspan Pocket
Build a bird engine through habitat actions and resource management.
Explore Wingspan Pocket’s standalone bird engine, game facts, rules, powers, scoring and strategy, with current publisher sources.
Build one row of birds beside your nest. On each turn, choose to play a bird, draw two cards or lay up to three eggs.
After that nest action, eligible brown powers activate along your row. Printed bird points, eggs and tucked cards score; advanced mode also adds end goals.

Why it stands out
The single-row format creates an engine that activates on each turn while reducing the separate boards and resources of original Wingspan. You still need to weigh immediate points against powers that have enough turns left to pay off.
What the compact format changes
Bird and food cards are double-sided. A card drawn as food remains food in your reserve; a bird card offers its printed points and an ability. Choosing what to draw affects both your next purchase and the powers available to your flock.
There is one row beside your nest instead of three habitat rows. Brown powers resolve from left to right after a nest action; green powers are ongoing effects during your turns.

What makes the pocket game different?
Food and birds share double-sided cards. A card drawn as food stays food in your reserve; a bird card stays a bird. There is no die-based birdfeeder or three-habitat player mat. Each player builds one row of birds beside a nest card, and every turn can activate the brown powers in that row from left to right.
On your turn, play one bird, draw two cards or lay up to three eggs on different cards. Then you may activate brown bird powers and refill the bird market. Green powers are ongoing abilities during your own turns rather than another step in the left-to-right brown sequence.
When someone plays their sixth bird, the current turn finishes and the cycle continues only far enough to give everyone the same number of turns. The nest does not count as a bird. You do not start an additional full round.
Who it may suit
The pocket design may suit a group that wants a shorter engine-building decision cycle and fewer separate resources to administer. Bird effects still need careful reading: a power that changes a playing cost is different from one that changes symbols in another power. The smaller format does not remove that wording challenge.
It may be less suitable if your favorite part of original Wingspan is choosing among three habitats or using a large collection of compatible expansion birds. Pocket is independent. Original Wingspan bird cards and expansion systems are not a shared card pool for this game.
A useful first decision
Illustrative analysis: Compare a bird worth six printed points with a lower-point bird that can draw a useful card on later turns. If the latter will activate several times before the finish, it may improve your future options. If an opponent already has five birds, that same delayed benefit may have little time to matter. Printed points and timing belong in the same comparison.
Do not count every power activation as a guaranteed point. Drawing a bird does not play it, a tuck may spend a useful reserve card, and an egg effect still needs capacity. The strategy guide separates immediate scoring from benefits that require another action.
How scoring and advanced mode work
Multiplayer scoring adds printed points on played birds, one point per egg and one per tucked card. Eggs on the nest count. Unplayed reserve birds and remaining food do not score, although total reserve cards are the first tiebreaker.
Advanced mode adds two end goals and lets you choose which two of your six starting cards become birds. Each goal rewards qualifying eggs; one egg can qualify for both goals as well as its ordinary egg point. That makes egg placement more deliberate, but it does not change the three basic actions.
Base game, advanced mode and solo
Wingspan Pocket is its own standalone game. Advanced mode and Automa are included modes rather than purchases required to finish the game. Use the multiplayer rulebook for the human game and the separate Automa instructions for solo setup and the opponent’s behavior.
