Carcassonne Meeple Placement Rules: Occupied Features, Merging & Returns
In Carcassonne, you may place a meeple only after placing your tile, and only onto a feature on the tile you just placed.
Where can a meeple go?
You may place a meeple on an eligible road, city, monastery or field segment on the tile you just placed, subject to the feature’s normal rules.
Can you place on an occupied feature?
No. Before placing your meeple, trace the entire connected feature. If another meeple already occupies that connected road, city or field, you cannot add another meeple to it directly.
How do two players end up on the same feature?
Separate features can later be joined by a newly placed tile. That can merge roads, cities or fields that already contain meeples from different players.
What happens when an occupied feature merges?
All meeples remain. When the feature is eventually scored, the player with the most meeples on that feature receives the points. If players tie for most, each tied player receives the full score.
When does a meeple return?
After a completed road, city or monastery is scored, the meeple on that completed feature returns to its owner’s supply and can be used again later.
Do farmers return during the game?
No. Farmers remain on their fields until final scoring in the standard farmer rules.
Can you place a meeple after scoring?
No. The turn order is place a tile, optionally place a meeple, then score completed features. A meeple returned during scoring cannot immediately be placed onto the tile from that same turn.
