Carcassonne Scoring Explained: Roads, Cities, Monasteries & Farmers
Carcassonne scores completed roads, cities and monasteries during the game, then scores unfinished features and farmers after the final tile. Majority decides who receives a feature’s points, and tied leaders each receive the full value rather than splitting it.
Researched rules guide. Checked September 20, 2026 against Z-Man Games’ current English rules and farmer supplement. Editorial standards.
Completed roads: 1 point per tile
A completed road scores 1 point for every land tile in that road. The player with the most meeples on it scores the full value; tied leaders each score the full value. Return those meeples after scoring.
Completed cities: 2 per tile and coat of arms
During the game, a completed city is worth 2 points per city tile plus 2 points per coat of arms in that city. Majority and ties work the same way as roads.
Completed monasteries score 9
A monastery surrounded by all eight neighboring tiles scores 9 points: 1 for its own tile and 1 for each surrounding tile.
Unfinished features score less at the end
- Incomplete road: 1 point per road tile.
- Incomplete city: 1 point per city tile plus 1 per coat of arms.
- Incomplete monastery: 1 point for the monastery tile plus 1 for every surrounding tile already present.
Use the same majority rule for unfinished roads and cities. Completing a city before the last tile therefore roughly doubles its tile-and-shield value compared with leaving it unfinished.
Farmers score completed cities touching the field
If your group uses farmers, each field is scored at the end. The player with the most farmers in that connected field scores 3 points for each completed city touching it. Tied leaders each score the full field value. Incomplete cities do not count.
Worked examples
A completed city using four tiles with two coats of arms scores 12 points: 4 × 2 + 2 × 2. If that same city were unfinished at game end, it would score 6.
A farmer controlling a field touching three completed cities scores 9 points, regardless of how large those cities are.
