Carcassonne Tile Placement Rules: Matching Roads, Cities & Fields

Every Carcassonne turn begins by drawing and legally placing one landscape tile. The new tile must connect to the existing map and every touching edge must match.

What counts as a legal placement?

At least one side of the new tile must touch a tile already in play. Every touching edge must continue the same type of landscape.

Roads must match roads

If an edge contains a road, the touching edge of the neighboring tile must also contain a road connection in the corresponding position.

Cities must match cities

A city edge must touch another city edge. You cannot place a field edge directly against a city edge.

Fields must continue fields

Field edges must connect to compatible field edges. Roads and cities visually divide fields and determine whether field regions are connected.

Can a tile touch more than one existing tile?

Yes. In that case every touching edge must be legal simultaneously.

Can you rotate the tile?

Yes. Rotate the tile before placing it to find any legal orientation.

What if the tile cannot be placed anywhere?

Under the standard rules, if a drawn tile genuinely cannot be placed legally anywhere, set it aside and draw another tile.

Do you have to place next to your own meeple?

No. Tile placement is independent of ownership. You may extend or complete another player’s feature if the tile fits legally.
