Risk Attack & Dice Rules: Attacker, Defender, Ties & Conquering
Risk combat compares the attacker’s highest dice with the defender’s highest dice. If both sides roll at least two dice, compare a second pair as well.
How many dice can the attacker roll?
Up to 3, but you must leave at least one troop behind in the attacking territory. That means a territory needs at least 2 troops to attack at all.
How many dice can the defender roll?
Up to 2, limited by the number of troops in the defending territory.
Who wins ties?
The defender wins every tied comparison.
How are losses applied?
For each dice comparison, the side with the lower die removes one troop. A maximum of two troops can be lost in a single battle roll because at most two pairs are compared.
Can you attack repeatedly?
Yes. During your attack phase you may continue attacking eligible adjacent territories and may repeat attacks against the same territory while you still have enough troops.
What happens when the defender loses the last troop?
You conquer the territory and must move troops into it under the movement requirement in the rules.
