Scrabble Scoring Rules: Premium Squares, Blanks & 50-Point Bonus
Scrabble scoring starts with the printed value of each letter in every word created or modified during the turn.
Letter premiums first
A double-letter square doubles the value of the newly placed tile. A triple-letter square triples it. Blank tiles always have a value of zero, even when placed on a letter premium.
Then apply word premiums
After letter values are added, double-word and triple-word squares multiply the entire word. If one word covers more than one word premium on the same turn, apply each multiplier.
Premium squares are one-time effects
Once a tile covers a premium square, that square does not score again on later turns. The tile contributes only its normal printed value to future words.
Crosswords can score twice
If newly placed tiles create more than one complete word, score each word separately. A newly placed tile can therefore contribute to both the main word and a crossing word.
Seven-tile bonus
If you play all seven tiles from your rack in one turn, add 50 points after totaling the words formed that turn.
Endgame adjustment
At the end, each player subtracts the value of unplayed tiles. If a player used all rack tiles, add the opponents’ leftover tile values to that player’s score.
