Citadels Strategy: Draft Reading, Role Risk & City Timing
Editorial analysis: Citadels rewards choosing a character that is useful but not obvious. The strongest role can be the worst draft if everyone knows exactly why you need it.
Draft against what opponents expect
If your city obviously wants the Merchant or Architect, consider whether the table will target that role with Assassin/Thief effects. A second-best role that actually survives can create more value.
Track visible and removed characters
The draft gives partial information. Use face-up removed characters, roles passed to you and previous player habits to narrow who could hold each dangerous character.
Build an economy before expensive purple districts
High-cost districts score well but can stall your city if you repeatedly spend whole turns saving gold. Early color synergy can generate the income needed to build more consistently.
Do not make completion timing obvious
A player one district from triggering the end becomes a target for Warlord-style destruction and role denial. Keep enough gold/cards to finish unexpectedly when possible.
Color diversity is a real scoring route
The bonus for having all standard district colors can justify a slightly inefficient build if it also reduces dependence on one predictable income character.
Late game: value immediate points over long-term powers
A purple district with a multi-round engine is weak if the game ends this round. Shift toward cheap completion, printed point value and final-scoring effects.
