Finspan Strategy: Dive Engines, Fish Timing & Population Growth
Editorial analysis: Finspan rewards building fish powers early enough to trigger repeatedly, then shifting from engine growth into population and point conversion before the fourth week ends.
Early fish should improve future dives
A fish with a useful dive power gains value every time that route is used. Prioritize early placements that increase card flow, population growth or flexibility rather than high printed points that contribute little to the engine.
Build depth access before collecting cards you cannot play
Fish have placement requirements. A hand full of attractive deep-water cards is weak if your ocean cannot legally support them yet. Improve the zones and positions that match the cards you are likely to keep.
Dive where multiple powers chain
A dive is strongest when several fish along the route create a sequence: draw cards, place eggs, hatch young, then convert population again. A route with one excellent power can be weaker than a route with three moderate powers that reinforce each other.
Do not leave population conversion until the final turn
Eggs, young and schools occupy different stages and scoring roles. If your plan depends on schools, start hatching early enough that the young exist before the conversion power becomes necessary.
Use achievements as timing bonuses
Weekly achievements can justify accelerating a category now, but forcing an inefficient move for a small placement gain can damage the remaining engine. Prefer actions that improve both the current achievement and long-term ocean.
Card draw is only useful if hand quality improves
Drawing many fish consumes actions later if most cannot fit your depth plan. Keep cards whose costs, habitats and powers connect to the tableau you are actually building.
Week 4 is for conversion
With no future week to exploit a new engine, late fish need immediate points or a powerful final dive effect. Turn remaining cards and population into score rather than building infrastructure that will never trigger enough times.
