Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition Strategy: Actions, Clues & Tempo
Editorial analysis: Mansions of Madness is an action-economy game inside a narrative shell. The team usually loses more time to unnecessary movement and low-value interactions than to bad dice.
Prioritize objective information over map completion
Not every Search icon is equally important. Follow story clues, locked routes and app prompts that are likely to reveal the scenario objective instead of clearing every optional room.
Exploit interrupted movement
A Move action can often be broken around another action. Plan routes so an investigator moves, searches/interacts and then uses remaining movement efficiently rather than paying for another full Move next turn.
Split only when each branch has a purpose
Separate investigators can cover the map faster, but isolated characters are vulnerable to monster attacks and may be unable to trade key items. Split for parallel objectives, not simply because unexplored corridors exist.
Allocate items by skill profile
Put weapons on investigators who can pass the relevant attack tests and clue/puzzle tools on characters whose skills convert them reliably. Trading later costs actions and positioning.
Kill monsters when they cost more future actions than the attack
A distant monster may be ignored; one blocking a key room can inflict repeated movement penalties, attacks and Horror checks. Prioritize enemies that interfere with objective tempo.
Late scenario: stop collecting optional value
When the app makes the objective clear, convert every remaining action toward it. Extra items and unexplored rooms do not matter if the timer/event pressure closes the scenario first.
