Maracaibo Strategy: Route Tempo, Cards & Influence
Editorial analysis: Maracaibo is a tempo game disguised as a route game. Moving farther can deny opponents turns, but skipping too much can leave your engine underdeveloped.
Move only as far as the next valuable action
Do not race around the map automatically. Stop when the location meaningfully advances cards, influence, exploration or income.
Build cards that reinforce one economy
Project cards are strongest when several share resource, income or scoring synergies. Avoid a tableau full of unrelated effects.
Deliver goods when the reward accelerates the next turn
A delivery that gives money, influence or upgrade access can be worth more than one with higher immediate points but no tempo value.
Influence is relative
National scoring depends on both the nation’s position and your standing within it. Do not invest heavily in a nation rivals are making much more valuable unless you can compete there.
Ship upgrades should pay across rounds
Early movement, hand and income upgrades compound. Late upgrades need direct scoring or an immediate tactical payoff.
Round 4: compress the route
When the game is nearly over, prioritize final card scoring, influence, exploration and locations that convert remaining resources into VP.
