Res Arcana Strategy: Essence Engines, Passing & Point Races
Editorial analysis: Res Arcana is less about drawing answers than extracting maximum value from the eight artifacts you were given. Identify the deck’s conversion loop before spending the first essence.
Find your resource bottleneck immediately
Look at the artifacts and Place of Power you are likely to pursue. Determine which essence type will constrain the plan and protect or generate it early.
Discard weak artifacts when tempo matters
Not every card deserves to be built. An artifact whose main value arrives too slowly can be more useful as immediate essence if that accelerates a Place of Power or stronger engine piece.
Sequence activations before paying costs
Many powers convert one essence into another or generate discounts. Activate the engine in an order that avoids paying scarce resources before a later effect would have produced them.
Claim contested scoring engines before opponents
Places of Power and monuments are shared. If your engine clearly depends on one, delaying can let another player take it and force an expensive pivot.
Passing early can be an action
When remaining activations produce little value, passing can secure first-player priority and a better magic item for the next round rather than spending resources on marginal actions.
Count the opponent’s 10-point route
The game can end sooner than your engine wants. Once a rival is near 10 VP, convert stored essences into immediate points instead of investing in another round of production.
