Risk Strategy: Borders, Continent Bonuses, Cards & Attack Timing
Risk strategy is less about winning every battle than about converting armies into a position that is expensive for opponents to attack.
Prefer defensible borders
A continent or region is valuable only if you can hold it. Count how many entry points must be defended before committing heavily to a bonus.
Attack for a purpose
Capturing one territory can be enough to earn a Risk card. Extra attacks should usually improve a border, break an opponent’s bonus or create a realistic elimination opportunity.
Use card timing
Because set values escalate globally, later trades can create large swings. Watch opponents’ card counts and avoid leaving a player with many cards easy to eliminate.
Do not overextend after a conquest
A long attack chain can leave multiple new borders thinly defended. Preserve enough strength behind the front to survive the next player.
Eliminations can be decisive
Eliminating a player transfers their Risk cards under the standard rules, which can create an immediate reinforcement swing if it forces a trade.
