Gaia Project Strategy: Faction Economy, Research & Federations
Editorial analysis: Gaia Project rewards plans that align four things at once: your faction economy, the current round-scoring tile, the two final-scoring tiles and a research path that makes expansion cheaper.
Choose an opening that uses your faction’s actual advantage
The factions do not begin from equal economic incentives. Before chasing generic “best moves,” identify which income, research or spatial advantage your faction can exploit earlier or more cheaply than opponents.
Upgrade for income early, for points later
An early research lab, academy or planetary institute can repay across several income phases. The same upgrade in round 6 has almost no time to produce income, so late upgrades should instead satisfy round scoring, tech effects, federation power or final scoring.
Do not terraform expensively when research can solve the problem
Repeated high-cost terraforming can consume the ore needed for structures and federations. If your expansion plan depends on distant planet types, investing in the Terraforming track or choosing easier targets may create more total actions.
Use round scoring as a timing bonus, not a command
A round tile makes certain actions more valuable, but forcing an inefficient action solely for the bonus can damage the economy. The strongest turns combine something you already need with the current scoring condition.
Keep power cycling
Power sitting in bowl I or II is potential, not usable action economy. Build near opponents when the adjacency cost is acceptable, charge from their building actions and spend bowl-III power often enough that tokens can cycle again.
Federations should solve more than one objective
A federation can provide a token, research access, resources and progress toward final-scoring conditions. Plan structure placement so the same cluster supports a federation without requiring excessive satellites or awkward extra builds.
Read final-scoring tiles from round 1
Final rankings can be worth a large share of the game. If the tiles reward sectors, planet diversity, Gaia Planets, structures or satellites, your expansion geometry should reflect that before the map becomes crowded.
Research level 3 is a meaningful scoring threshold
At game end, levels 3, 4 and 5 each contribute research VP. Advancing several tracks to level 2 gives no final research score from those tracks, so late knowledge should be evaluated against the next scoring threshold rather than spread automatically.
