Patchwork Scoring: Buttons, Empty Squares & the 7×7 Bonus

Patchwork scoring starts with your remaining buttons, adds 7 points if you earned the special 7×7 tile, then subtracts 2 points for every empty square on your 9×9 quilt board.

Researched rules guide. Checked September 20, 2026 against Lookout Games’ current Revised Edition rules. Editorial standards.

The formula

Final score = remaining buttons + 7-point bonus if earned − 2 × empty quilt squares.

The 7×7 bonus goes to one player

The first player to completely fill any 7×7 square area on their quilt receives the special tile worth 7 points. Once taken, the other player cannot earn another one later.

Worked total

You finish with 24 buttons, own the 7-point tile and have 9 empty squares. Your score is 24 + 7 − 18 = 13.

A player can finish with a negative score if empty-space penalties exceed buttons and bonuses.

The game ends when both time tokens finish

Both players must reach the final time-space before scoring. If movement would pass the final space, stop on it.

Tie rule

If final scores tie, the player who reached the final time-space first wins.
