Electrify
Build a constantly shifting electricity engine across five revolving sectors, chain activations together, meet rising demand and score more efficiently by transitioning toward cleaner power.
Electrify is a card-driven engine-building game from John D. Clair and Ian Hutchison, published by Alderac Entertainment Group. Players develop an electricity company across five revolving sectors, improve those sectors with Industry cards and time activations so that multiple parts of the engine can trigger together.
The Kickstarter launched on September 22, 2026 and is scheduled to close on October 16/17 depending on time zone. The campaign has already cleared its $10,000 goal many times over and remains one of the most visible unreleased strategy games on BoardGameGeek.
Why it stands out
The core hook is that your engine does not stay still. Every turn changes the relative strength and position of your five sectors, so the challenge is not just to build strong cards but to activate them at the right moment before the whole machine shifts again.
Why this has strong search potential
Electrify has spent much of its campaign near the top of BoardGameGeek’s Hotness. It also comes from John D. Clair, whose earlier games include Space Base and Mystic Vale, giving the project a built-in engine-building audience.
The search opportunity extends beyond the game title itself: revolving sectors, arrow chains, solo scenarios, Tech Packs, Fusion, fifth-player support, Kickstarter pledges and Board Game Arena availability all create distinct long-tail queries.
Game at a Glance
Build Five Sectors
Your company is split into five sectors that become stronger the longer they wait to activate.
Revolve the Engine
Using a sector changes the configuration of your tableau and alters future timing decisions.
Chain Actions
Arrow effects can trigger neighboring sectors and turn one activation into a much larger combo.
Meet Energy Demand
Satisfy increasingly difficult Demand cards while improving the cleanliness and efficiency of your network.
How Electrify works
Electrify lasts 12 rounds. Each round, players choose one of the five sectors in their personal engine and activate the cards in that sector.
Industry cards improve sectors by adding action icons, production, infrastructure and chaining effects. The more efficiently those effects line up, the larger your turn can become.
The important twist is timing: sectors become more powerful the longer they have gone unused, so the strongest immediate action may not always be the best long-term choice.
How the five revolving sectors work
Each player has five Industry Sector tiles. Those sectors effectively rotate through your engine as they are used.
A sector that waits becomes more charged and therefore more valuable when eventually activated. Using it resets or changes that position, meaning your engine constantly rewires itself over the game.
This is why Electrify is more dynamic than a conventional tableau builder: there is no permanent “best row” that you simply trigger over and over.
How chained activations work
Some Industry cards contain arrow effects that trigger neighboring sectors.
A well-timed activation can therefore cascade from one sector into another and create a large combo turn. Those chains are one of the major skill tests in the game because the cards need to be arranged so the arrows point toward useful follow-up sectors.
Editorial strategy principle: a card’s value depends not only on its printed reward but also on where it sits in the five-sector chain.
Production and Infrastructure cards
The base game contains separate Production and Infrastructure Industry decks along with Basic Industry cards.
Players add these cards to sectors to increase output, improve chaining opportunities and change the way particular parts of the engine behave.
Because cards can make sectors better in different ways, two players can begin with the same five-sector structure and end up with completely different engines.
How Demand cards score
Demand cards represent the growing need for electricity.
Meeting those demands is one of the main ways to convert your engine into Energy Points. Later demand is more challenging, pushing players to scale production rather than rely forever on an early-game setup.
Cleaner energy is also rewarded more strongly, tying the game’s solarpunk theme to scoring rather than treating sustainability as decorative artwork.
Research and cleaner technology
Electrify includes a research track and breakthrough-style rewards that help players improve their energy systems.
Research becomes especially important when using advanced content such as Fusion, where new technology can change how far sectors are shifted or how efficiently power is generated.
The key strategic question is whether investing in long-term research will repay itself before the 12-round game ends.
Is Electrify simultaneous?
Much of the game uses simultaneous decision-making, reducing downtime while each player develops their own engine.
That makes the game faster than its strategic depth might suggest, but it also means new groups need to understand the iconography well enough to resolve their turns correctly without constant table-wide checking.
Previewers have noted that first games may run longer while players learn the engine structure.
Does Electrify have solo play?
Yes. The base game includes dedicated solo components and scenario cards.
Current prototype component lists include sector-boost tokens, bonus rewards and four solo scenarios.
The Fusion expansion also adds additional solo scenarios, giving one-player users more structured goals than simply chasing a generic high score.
Can you play Electrify on Board Game Arena?
AEG has been testing Electrify digitally through Board Game Arena during the campaign period.
The implementation began in Alpha and has been moving toward wider Beta access. The exact access state can change, but AEG is explicitly using BGA as a way for players to learn and test the game before the physical release.
For uncertain backers, that makes Electrify unusually easy to try before buying.
What are the Electrify Tech Packs?
The campaign includes two advanced 20-card modules designed to be mixed into the normal Industry decks.
Supercharged Tech Pack
This pack adds more advanced card effects aimed at experienced players who want more unusual interactions and bigger combo possibilities.
Diversified Tech Pack
Diversified contains 20 passively charging Industry cards. These cards gain charge when you activate sectors to their right, allowing new multi-sector timing strategies.
The packs are optional rather than required for the normal game.
What does the Fusion expansion add?
Electrify: Fusion introduces a new energy type and public Challenge cards.
Players can complete research-oriented challenges to gain rewards, including grants that permanently shift sectors and allow stronger charging patterns.
Fusion also includes additional solo content, so it expands both competitive and one-player play.
Can Electrify support five players?
The retail base game is listed for 1–4 players.
The Kickstarter campaign offers a dedicated 5th Player Expansion with the components needed to add another innovator.
Players who expect to use five regularly should therefore compare the Visionary pledge with buying the fifth-player module separately.
Electrify Kickstarter pledges
| Pledge | Campaign price | Main contents |
|---|---|---|
| Innovator | $39 | Retail Edition + unlocked stretch goals |
| Visionary | $69 | Base game, both Tech Packs, Fusion, 5th Player Expansion, Upgrade Pack, all unlocked stretch goals and Kickstarter-exclusive box |
There is also a $5 pledge-manager access option. Shipping and taxes are not included in the headline pledge prices.
Is the $39 Innovator pledge enough?
Yes. Innovator is the normal complete base game with campaign stretch goals.
It is the better reference point for buyers who want to evaluate Electrify as a 1–4 player engine builder rather than as a collector bundle.
The advanced modules are optional; the core game is not designed as a cut-down demo that requires the Visionary tier to feel complete.
What does the $69 Visionary pledge add?
Visionary is the all-in gameplay and upgrade tier.
AEG’s campaign FAQ confirms that it includes all add-ons and expansions, plus a Kickstarter-exclusive alternate-art box. Current campaign materials list:
- Supercharged Tech Pack.
- Diversified Tech Pack.
- Fusion micro-expansion.
- 5th Player Expansion.
- Upgrade Pack with premium component upgrades.
- Unlocked stretch goals.
AEG says the bundle is priced $40 below buying its contents separately at MSRP.
How do shipping and VAT work?
Shipping is charged later through the pledge manager rather than included in the $39 or $69 pledge.
AEG says EU and UK orders are planned to ship through regional depots with customs/duties prepaid in the normal “EU/UK Friendly” model.
VAT and other required taxes are still assessed in the pledge manager, so the pledge amount should not be treated as the final landed cost.
When will Electrify be released?
The Kickstarter lists an estimated delivery of September 2027.
That is an estimate rather than a guaranteed arrival date. AEG explicitly notes normal production, shipping and customs risks.
The campaign itself ends on October 16 in the United States, corresponding to early October 17 in parts of Europe.
Will Electrify come to retail?
Yes. The $39 Innovator tier is explicitly based on the retail edition.
AEG also says it expects to work with international publishing partners on translated retail editions after the campaign.
The Kickstarter-exclusive alternate-art box and some campaign extras should not be assumed to appear in normal retail copies.
Is Electrify language dependent?
The Kickstarter campaign itself is English-only, but the game is largely icon-driven.
AEG has indicated that retail localization will be handled later through international partners.
This makes the base gameplay relatively accessible across languages even if campaign packaging and rules are English.
Electrify compared with other engine builders
| Game | Shared appeal | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Earth | Card-driven engine growth and large combo turns | Earth builds a stable tableau; Electrify constantly rotates which sectors are strongest. |
| Terraforming Mars | Engine growth, energy/economic development and long-term card synergy | Terraforming Mars is longer and more open-ended; Electrify is a tighter 12-round timing puzzle. |
| Best Engine-Building Board Games | Compounding resources and effects | Electrify’s defining feature is the moving five-sector structure rather than a static engine. |
Who may like Electrify?
Electrify is likely to appeal most to players who enjoy engine builders but want turns to feel more tactical and timing-driven than simply accumulating permanent upgrades.
It may also suit groups that want a medium-weight strategy game around an hour rather than a two- or three-hour engine builder.
It may be less suitable if you dislike simultaneous resolution, combo-heavy card systems or having to constantly reassess an engine that changes position after every activation.
Seven things to check before backing
