Odysseus

Draft Trials from Ulysses’ ship, build four heroic skills, gather Tales and race to complete an Epic before the voyage reaches Ithaca.

♟1–5 Players ◷25–35 Minutes ▣2026 ⚙Light ◆Drafting + Set Collection

Odysseus is a 2026 family strategy game from Gigamic, designed by Johannes Goupy and Matthieu Verdier. Players accompany Ulysses on his journey home, drafting Trial cards and developing four skills—Strength, Intelligence, Cunning and Luck—to overcome the challenges collected during the voyage.

The game is officially for 1–5 players, includes a solo Automa, and targets a short session of roughly 25–35 minutes. Its main tension comes from drafting cards that are useful both as immediate skill-building tools and as end-game scoring opportunities.

Why it stands out

Odysseus makes drafting do several jobs at once. A Trial card can improve a skill, contribute to a Tale, help complete a five-category Epic and eventually score points if your corresponding skill is high enough. The best card is therefore rarely just the one with the largest visible number.

What makes the draft interesting

Trial cards sit in two lines beside Ulysses’ Ship, and only cards exposed at the outer ends can be drafted. Taking one card can reveal new choices for the next player, so every pick changes the market.

This creates a simple but meaningful tempo problem: take the card that is best for your own tableau, or deny a card that would complete an opponent’s Tale, Epic category set or skill plan.

How Odysseus works

On your turn, first draft exactly one Trial card from an exposed end of one of the two card rows next to Ulysses’ Ship.

Then choose between two broad uses for that card: Depart on an Adventure or Rest.

When you Depart, the card goes into the matching skill column of your personal Tales board and you resolve its immediate bonuses. When you Rest, the card is played face down instead; you give up its normal bonuses but gain flexibility through a skill increase and Athena’s Favour.

When the ship display runs down to one card, that card is discarded and the display refills.

The four skills

Every Trial is associated with one of four skills:

  • Strength
  • Intelligence
  • Cunning
  • Luck

Your skill tracks determine whether you ultimately pass the Trials collected in the corresponding columns.

That means drafting a high-value Trial without building the relevant skill can be risky: the card may look valuable when taken but fail to produce its full end-game points.

Adventure vs Rest

The Adventure/Rest choice is Odysseus’ main flexibility valve.

Adventure is the normal route when you want the card’s specific bonuses and intend to use that Trial in the relevant skill column. A column can hold only a limited number of cards.

Rest gives up the printed card benefit but lets you improve a skill more flexibly and gain Athena’s Favour.

Rest is therefore not simply a weak fallback. It can be the correct choice when a card is poor for your tableau but useful as a way to fix a skill deficit or generate Favour.

What Athena’s Favour does

Athena’s Favour is a flexible resource. Publisher teaching material identifies two important uses: spend one token to alter which skill you can increase from a card effect, or save three tokens to buy a Tale tile.

That creates an immediate-versus-delayed choice. Spending one token can repair a skill track now; saving three can create a larger end-game scoring opportunity.

How Tale tiles work

Tale tiles are end-game scoring objectives linked to the cards in your tableau.

They can be gained either by spending three Athena’s Favour tokens or by completing a horizontal row of four Trial cards containing all four different skills.

The important detail is that Tale scoring can reward relevant Trial cards even if those individual Trials were not successfully passed. That gives some otherwise weak cards a second source of value.

How to complete an Epic

Odysseus also rewards category diversity. The five Trial categories are Navigation, Encounters, Gods, Creatures and Ithaca.

Collecting one Trial from all five categories lets you claim an Epic tile. The highest-value Epic tiles go first, so completing the set earlier can be worth more than completing it later.

This creates a race layered on top of the four-skill puzzle: skills ask you to specialize enough to pass Trials, while Epics ask you to diversify across categories.

A useful first strategic question

Illustrative analysis: suppose a Trial improves a skill you already lead in, while another exposed card completes your fifth Epic category but supports a weaker skill.

The second card may be more valuable because it creates an immediate Epic reward and prevents an opponent from taking the same exposed opportunity. The best draft should therefore be judged by skill progress + set progress + market impact, not just printed points.

This is editorial analysis from the published rules structure, not a claim of solved competitive strategy.

How Odysseus scoring works

At the end of the game, resolve the Trials in each skill column. A Trial scores if your final skill level meets or exceeds that card’s difficulty requirement.

Then add bonus points from Tale tiles and your Epic tile.

This means a card can contribute in multiple ways: its immediate effect, its category toward an Epic, its role in a Tale and its own Trial points if your skill qualifies.

Does Odysseus have a solo mode?

Yes. Gigamic officially lists the game for 1–5 players, and the physical box includes Automa material for solo play.

Published component lists include 16 Automa cards and four Automa difficulty tiles.

This hub confirms the official solo mode but does not reproduce the full Automa procedure. If Search Console later shows meaningful “Odysseus solo rules” demand, that can justify a separate focused article.

Player count and play time

Gigamic lists 1–5 players and about 25 minutes. Hachette’s UK product page gives about 35 minutes, so a practical expectation is roughly 25–35 minutes depending on player count and familiarity.

Current BGG player-count voting is still too limited for a reliable “best at” verdict. The game is new enough that this page avoids manufacturing one.

Can you play Odysseus online?

Yes. Odysseus is available digitally on Board Game Arena.

That gives players a low-risk way to learn the draft structure and see whether the light family-strategy weight suits them before buying the physical game.

2026 release status

Odysseus released in France in September 2026. Hachette Boardgames UK lists the UK launch as September 16, 2026.

The official English rulebook was uploaded by the Gigamic team in late September 2026, so the English rules environment is now stable enough for a researched hub.

Regional distribution can still differ, but Odysseus is a current 2026 release rather than an unreleased preview.

What’s in the box?

Published component lists include the Ulysses Ship board, five personal Tales boards, 60 Trial cards, 28 Tale tokens, 40 Athena’s Favour tokens, five Epic tiles, wooden cubes, solo Automa cards and difficulty tiles, plus a scorepad.

The component structure closely mirrors the gameplay: most pieces either track skill development, create set-collection goals or support the shared drafting market.

Who it may suit

Odysseus may suit families and mixed-experience groups that want a game with easy turn structure but enough overlapping objectives to make card choices matter.

It is also a useful option for groups that regularly play with five people and want something substantially shorter than a full evening strategy game.

It may be less suitable if you want high player conflict, deep asymmetric powers or a heavy simulation of Homer’s Odyssey. The mythology supports the structure, but the game remains a light drafting/tableau game.
