Twilight Struggle

Compete for global influence as the United States or Soviet Union in a tense card-driven Cold War game where every card can be an operation, an event or both.

♟2 Players◷2–3 Hours♜Ages 13+⚙Heavy◆Card-Driven

The United States and Soviet Union compete for influence across regions of the world during the Cold War.

Cards can be used for operations, events or the Space Race. Scoring cards periodically evaluate regional presence, domination and control.

Why We Love It

Twilight Struggle makes every card a dilemma because many cards contain an event that helps one side. Using a card for operations may still trigger the opponent’s event, so sequencing matters throughout the hand.

What is Twilight Struggle?

Twilight Struggle is Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews’ card-driven Cold War strategy game, first published in 2005. It is fundamentally a two-player contest between the United States and Soviet Union.

The map tracks influence across regions of the world while the card deck introduces historical events, scoring cards and operational points.

How the game works

On an action round, a card can generally be used for its operations value or for its event. When you play an opponent-associated card for operations, its event can still trigger, creating the game’s signature timing dilemmas.

Regional scoring, DEFCON, the Space Race and the victory-point track create several interacting constraints around where and when influence is worth placing.

The decisions that define it

The central skill is damage control. Many hands contain cards that help the opponent, so good play is often about choosing when an unavoidable event will hurt least.

Scoring-card timing also changes the value of the map: influence that is marginal now can become decisive just before a region scores.

Who is it for?

Choose Twilight Struggle if you want a tense, highly interactive two-player strategy game with a fixed historical event deck and substantial card knowledge.

Choose 7 Wonders Duel for a shorter duel or War of the Ring for a more narrative military epic.
