Vantage

A spoiler-light guide to the cooperative open-world adventure: actions, survival, missions, solo play and printing updates.

♟1–6 Players◷120–180 Minutes▣2025⚙Cooperative◆Solo supported

Vantage is a cooperative planetary adventure in which crash survivors explore from different first-person viewpoints. Players can talk and support one another even when their location cards place them far apart.

A session has a shared mission and may reveal personal destinies, but this is not a campaign with persistent progress. Each new game starts fresh, and the official rules allow several ways to end a session.

Why It Stands Out

Its scale serves discovery: nearly 800 interconnected locations and more than 900 additional discoverable cards. The core experience is deciding what to investigate without seeing everyone else’s location, then sharing clues and managing time, morale and health.

About Vantage

Stonemaier lists one to six players and a two-to-three-hour estimate. Location cards show a first-person scene and action options. Storybooks resolve actions without exposing all other outcomes on a location. This guide avoids plot spoilers and focuses on the basic decision structure.

What is Vantage?

Vantage is a replayable, open-world cooperative game, not a legacy campaign. You explore a large planet through illustrated location cards and storybook entries. Each player sees only their own current perspective. Communication is useful because a teammate may have found a skill, route, or clue that changes your options without everyone sharing one physical location.

There is a shared mission each game; the world also contains discoverable destinies. Winning by completing a mission or destiny is possible, but the publisher emphasizes the journey and allows players some choice about when to stop.

How to Play: A Spoiler-Light Turn

Choose a location action, a card action, or a depart action. The six common location categories include move, look, engage, help, take and overpower. Refer to the matching storybook entry for its cost and result. The action succeeds; the challenge is mitigating dice penalties to time, morale and health.

Ordinarily you may take at most one location action at a given location, even across later turns, unless an instruction makes an exception. Card and depart actions remain alternatives. Add cards you discover to your grid or supply as instructed. The official Rulepop reference covers the sequence, dice placement, special locations and exact exceptions.

A session can end when the mission is completed, a destiny is resolved, or a player’s time, morale or health reaches zero and the storybook directs you. You can also agree to stop at an allotted time. Do not read spoiler entries ahead of discovery.

Beginner Strategy and Tips

  • Describe what you see. Other players cannot inspect your location as their own; useful descriptions help the team identify routes and opportunities.
  • Use the mission as a direction, not a tunnel. Mission-card actions can help a stalled group, while exploratory actions may build useful cards and skills.
  • Protect all three tracks. Time, morale and health can each matter. Compare a risky action with a lower-cost way to gain a helpful ability.
  • Build your grid. New cards can add slots, powers or further actions; the publisher’s first-game advice encourages trying a variety of discoveries.
  • Read action restrictions carefully. A used location action is generally unavailable there later, but a card action or departure can move the story forward.

These are spoiler-light decision aids drawn from official rules. The world, mission and cards change what is best in any one session.

Solo Play and Group Communication

The base game supports solo play without requiring a second human. At a group table, separated viewpoints and open discussion are part of the design. The publisher’s rules explain how players may share information and help one another. The official FAQ also explains remote play when each participant has access to a copy of the game; do not assume one shared box can serve distant locations without a card-management plan.

Printing Updates, Errata and Accessories

Do not confuse corrections with a new campaign expansion. Stonemaier offers a first-printing update pack containing replacement cards and storybook stickers. First-printing boxes have individual numbering on the front lower-right corner. The publisher also lists a Trail and Sail errata pack for first and second printings, and a revised storybook pack. Rulepop supplies free digital storybook updates.

Playmats, coins and wooden tokens are optional physical upgrades. Check your copy’s printing, local retailer listing and the latest official errata before ordering duplicate materials. Prices and availability vary.

Common Questions

Is Vantage a campaign?

No. The publisher says you start fresh after each win or loss; progress does not persist between games.

Can a player take the same location action again?

Usually no. The official rules describe exceptions for certain locations and instructions; card and depart actions are different categories.

Can you win without completing the mission?

Yes. A destiny can also provide an ending. The official rules describe further choices and loss conditions.

Do I need an update pack?

That depends on the printing and whether you use the free updated digital storybooks. Check Stonemaier’s current pack descriptions.
