Spirit Island

Coordinate asymmetric Spirits, grow new powers and manipulate Invader actions to defend an island cooperatively from expanding colonists.

♟1–4 Players◷100 Minutes♜Ages 14+⚙Heavy◆Cooperative

Players control nature Spirits defending an island from invading colonists. Each Spirit chooses growth, gains energy and plays powers with different speeds and elemental effects.

Invaders explore, build and ravage according to a predictable sequence. The challenge is to prevent future damage while generating enough fear and destruction to satisfy the current victory condition.

Why We Love It

Spirit Island makes cooperation highly asymmetric. Each Spirit grows differently and manipulates the Invader cycle in its own way, so coordination is about combining powers rather than everyone solving the same problem.

What is Spirit Island?

Spirit Island is R. Eric Reuss’s cooperative strategy game for 1–4 players. Each player controls a Spirit with unique growth options, powers and elemental synergies while Invaders explore, build and ravage across the island.

Players work together with the Dahan and try to increase Fear while preventing Blight from overwhelming the land.

How the game works

A round combines Spirit phases and an automated Invader sequence. Spirits grow, gain energy, choose powers and resolve Fast powers before the Invaders act. Invaders then execute their scheduled actions, after which Slow powers resolve.

Victory normally depends on generating enough Fear to reduce the requirements for driving out Invader presence, while loss conditions include excessive Blight or running out of key components under the base rules.

The decisions that define it

Timing is the heart of the game. Preventing a Build this turn may be stronger than dealing more damage after a Ravage becomes inevitable.

Because Spirits have different strengths, coordination is often about dividing problems rather than everyone attacking the same region.

Who is it for?

Choose Spirit Island if your group wants a demanding cooperative game with strong asymmetry, planning and replayability.

If you want a faster cooperative introduction, start with Pandemic.
