How to Play Architects of the West Kingdom

Architects of the West Kingdom uses worker placement differently from most games: you normally place just one worker each turn, but the strength of many locations increases as more of your own workers accumulate there.

Your turn in one sentence

On your turn, place one worker from your supply onto a legal board location and resolve that location. There is no traditional round reset that returns every worker to you, so deciding where to build up a large workforce—and when to recover or protect it—is central to the game.

Why worker groups matter

Resource locations become stronger when several of your workers occupy the same area. Early turns may produce only a small amount, while a later placement onto a large group can generate a much bigger return.

The trade-off is visibility. A large group is efficient, but rival players can use the Town Centre system to capture exposed workers and disrupt that engine.

Main things you can do

  • Gather resources: build up workers in production locations to collect wood, stone, clay, silver and other materials.
  • Hire Apprentices: recruit characters that give ongoing discounts, bonuses or scoring support.
  • Use the King’s Storehouse: convert resources and take useful administrative actions.
  • Capture workers: target an opponent’s concentrated workforce through the Town Centre.
  • Visit the Guardhouse: interact with captured workers, the prison and related rewards.
  • Use the Black Market: obtain efficient goods at the cost of Virtue and with additional risk when the market resets.
  • Build: construct Building cards or contribute to the Cathedral through the Guildhall.

How building works

Building is one of the main ways to turn your resource engine into victory points. Building cards have costs and may also affect Virtue, taxes, debts or future efficiency. Apprentices can make certain building plans cheaper or more powerful.

The Cathedral is another long-term scoring route. Advancing there can produce strong end-game value, but your Virtue position matters because falling too far can restrict access to respectable actions.

Virtue and the Black Market

Virtue tracks how respectable your architect is. Some actions and card effects raise it; others lower it. Black Market actions are deliberately efficient but usually push you toward corruption.

Virtue is not simply a good-versus-bad meter. High and low positions change what is available to you and how the end game scores, so the important question is whether your chosen economy can absorb the consequences.

How worker capture works

Large worker groups can be targeted by other players. Capturing does not permanently remove workers from the game; it moves them into the capture/prison system, where they can later be sent to the Guardhouse, released or recovered through the appropriate actions.

This creates the game’s main interactive tension: concentrating workers improves action efficiency, but concentrating too many in one place invites a profitable raid.

When does the game end?

The game end is driven by completed construction at the Guildhall rather than a fixed number of ordinary rounds. As the available construction spaces fill, the end approaches quickly.

How do you score?

Final scoring is built from your constructed Buildings, Cathedral progress, Virtue position and other printed scoring sources. Debts and certain negative effects can reduce the total, while some resources or card abilities may also contribute points.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Spreading workers everywhere instead of deliberately building strong groups.
  • Leaving a huge worker stack exposed when another player can capture it profitably.
  • Taking Black Market value without planning for the Virtue loss.
  • Hiring Apprentices that do not support the Buildings you actually intend to construct.
  • Waiting too long to convert resources into Guildhall actions while the end-game clock accelerates.
