How to Play A Feast for Odin: Workers, Goods & Board Coverage
A Feast for Odin is a heavy worker-placement game in which actions generate goods, ships, livestock and exploration opportunities, while polyomino-style goods are placed on personal boards to cover penalties and unlock income.
Scope. This guide covers the current base game, not The Norwegians expansion.
Each round gives you more Vikings
Your worker supply grows over the game. Workers are placed on a large action board whose columns require different numbers of Vikings. Stronger actions usually cost more workers, so a single action can consume a large share of your round.
Choose actions from a large worker-placement board
Actions include gathering resources, crafting, trading, hunting, whaling, raiding, purchasing ships, breeding animals, emigrating and exploring islands. Many actions transform low-value goods into more useful blue and green goods for board coverage.
Goods are both resources and shapes
Place eligible goods on your home board and exploration boards according to the adjacency/color rules. Covering negative spaces reduces penalties; surrounding or covering income and bonus spaces improves future rounds.
Income is based on what your board has uncovered
At the income step, gain silver according to the highest visible income value on your board. Efficient tile placement can therefore turn one good into both reduced penalties and recurring money.
Hunting and raiding use dice-backed risk
Hunting, whaling and raiding require the appropriate action and equipment/ships. Dice results determine how much support you need to spend, creating a calculated risk compared with deterministic worker-placement actions.
Exploration adds new scoring boards
Claiming an exploration board can provide income, bonuses and scoring opportunities, but it also creates another area with uncovered negative points. Explore when your economy can actually fill the new board.
The game ends after the final round
Final scoring combines positive points from ships, livestock, emigration, exploration, buildings, silver and other sources with negative points left uncovered on personal boards.
