Anachrony Time Travel, Warp & Paradox Rules Explained

Anachrony’s signature system lets you take resources or workers from your future and use them now. The immediate benefit is simple; the rules confusion usually comes later, when the game asks whether those borrowed assets have been repaid and whether unresolved Warp tiles create Paradox.

What is a Warp tile?

During the Warp phase, you may place a Warp tile on the current Timeline space and immediately receive the asset shown by that tile. In theme, your future society has sent the asset back to the present.

The tile remains on the Timeline as an unresolved obligation. You have the benefit now, but you still need to create a consistent timeline later.

Does a warped resource cost anything immediately?

No. You receive the listed asset during the Warp phase. The cost appears later when you time travel and remove that Warp tile: you must have the matching asset available to send back into the past.

How does Focus work?

Your Focus indicates the Timeline Era you are currently able to reach with time travel. Power Plant effects can move Focus backward to an earlier Timeline tile. When you successfully travel to an Era containing one of your pending Warp tiles, you may repay the matching asset and remove that tile according to the action’s rules.

When does the Time Travel track advance?

The Time Travel marker advances when you complete the normal time-travel process and successfully remove a Warp tile by sending the required asset back. Removing a Warp tile through another effect does not automatically count as a successful time-travel advance.

This matters because spaces on the Time Travel track are worth victory points at the end of the game.

How does Paradox happen?

During the Paradox phase, unresolved Warp tiles can expose players to Paradox. The more heavily you have strained a particular point in the Timeline relative to the other players, the more likely you are to roll for it.

Paradox is therefore the pressure mechanism that stops Warp from being unlimited free acceleration.

What happens when you gain too much Paradox?

Accumulating enough Paradox causes an Anomaly. An Anomaly occupies a building space on your player board and is generally harmful until you spend an action and the required resources to seal it.

Anomalies can also cost victory points, so a player who borrows aggressively but never develops a repayment plan can lose both board space and scoring efficiency.

Can you remove a Warp tile without normal time travel?

Yes. Some game effects can retrieve or remove a Warp tile directly. However, direct retrieval is not identical to completing the normal time-travel process: it does not necessarily advance the Time Travel track.

Example

You Warp a Titanium during an early Era because it lets you construct an important building immediately. The Titanium is available now and the matching Warp tile stays on that Era’s Timeline space.

Later, you use a Power Plant to move your Focus back to that Era. If you have a Titanium available to send back, you can resolve the pending Warp tile through time travel. The tile is removed and, when the normal requirements are satisfied, your Time Travel marker advances.

How many times should you Warp?

The rules do not give a universal safe number. Strategically, each pending tile should have a reason to exist. Warp is strongest when the early asset creates more value than the later repayment and Paradox risk cost.

Common rules mistakes

  • Calling warped assets free resources. They are immediate resources with a future obligation.
  • Advancing the Time Travel track after every removed tile. Direct retrieval effects are not always normal time travel.
  • Ignoring Focus. You cannot simply repay any Warp tile from any Era whenever you choose.
  • Forgetting Paradox pressure. Pending Warp tiles matter during the Paradox phase.
  • Treating Anomalies as harmless. They occupy useful board space and can hurt scoring.
